No idea. I never looked at the oil pressure gauge while the car was running.

I just checked google maps and it was no more than 3 miles between my running over the debris and the engine cutting out.

Heading outside in a few to finally take a good look at it and run a compression test.

Its now the silver toast!

Just got done checking out the car.

First I found the hole in the oil cooler. Very small, but deadly. If the debris had hit 2 mm to the left of right I never would have had a problem, but it managed to shoot in between the vanes of the plastic fins on the valence and hit dead center on one of the oil passages in the lower part of the oil cooler.

I drained the oil pan and got out less than a quart. There is were no apparent metal shavings in the oil.

I did a compression test (cold obviously) on cylinders 1, 2 and 3 (4 and 5 will require a proper socket). #1 was oily and gave only 100 psi, #2 was dry and gave 300 psi, #3 was a little oily an gave 250 psi. Obviously I have too low of compression for the engine to run.

So the question now is, what are my options? Any thought on repairing this engine or do I start looking for a replacement engine? If I replace the engine, can I use a 300D engine and swap over the SLS pump? Or, do I bite the bullet, sell this car (parts or whole) and start looking for a new ride?

either rebuild or or get a new engine. The sls pump is not interchangeable unless you want to remove the head and replace it with your old one. The head still may be ok

And who carries comprehensive insurance on a 25 yr old car worth less than $2000.00 anyway?
I do! I took mine to an appraiser and had it insured for that, $10,200. You should be able to rebuild this engine though!

Man Douglas I'm very sorry to read about your troubles. Just wrong place, wrong time.
Sadly, your experience is a reminder to us to be sure and watch our oil pressure gauge if anything like that ever happens to us.
Hopefully you can find a good OM617 and swap over your SLS-ready head.
And I don't have anything but liability on any of mine........

I would find another 300TD and swap engines. Sorry to see my Euro TD's counterpart lose its engine
