Somewhat slow 87 300D

I looked at an 87 300D this weekend with 150,000 miles. Overall it was pretty nice, no smoke or blowby. I talked him down to 4000 there but he has been emailing me every few days with a new price, so now its down to 3600 which has be thinking...

Anyway, compared to the other 300D I have driven, the acceleration wasn't as good, and I don't recall hearing the turbo spool up. (we were talking quite a bit though) I read the "what to look for in an 87" document on here and it mentioned various things that could go wrong with acceleration.

So I guess my question is, do the turbos ever have problems, or is it most likely just in need of an ALDA adjustment or something of that nature?

I know bringing it in for an inspection would be best but I won't be able to do that for a week and don't want to bother if it seems like it could be a trouble spot that is more trouble than it's worth.

From my experience it is usually the overboost solenoid. Could be fuel filter, could be air filter, could be exhaust, could be wastegate, in that order, but most likely it is not getting a signal to the ALDA to enrich fuel with the boost.

If it is really sluggish off the line, and then takes off around 2300rpm, likely the ALDA needs adjustment. If it just never takes off, more likely the overboost circuit.

Try hooking the vacuum hose from the center driver's side of the intake plenum (high-center) to the ALDA (mushroom thing on top of the IP) directly and see if it changes the performance. The fitting in the intake can also be clogged with carbon, so a wire to clean the fitting might help. DO hook this up correctly again as it is the engine's protection from overboost if the wastegate fails.

Awesome, thanks. I think the other 300D I looked at had the ALDA problem because the turbo was very very strong once it kicked in..

Off topic question, is the pic below of leather or was this just another design on the MB tex? I am pretty sure it is leather but based on what I have read around here I could be wrong (its on the 87)

Looks like Champagne metallic paint with Mushroom leather interior. It is definately leather, the difference is the 'tex has ribs all of the way to the front and top of the seat in the '87s.

Palomino was more common in '87, I like the Mushroom if that's what it is.

On my 300SDL (same OM 603 engine) the PO had disconnected the line to the ALDA and plugged it with a golf tee! That really hurt off the line performance and was one of the reasons I got the car for $2k. After leaving his place I popped the line back on and it was 100% different.

I have now removed the ALDA and man, what a difference!

On my 603 I do not get that rush of turbo boost/whine like I used to get in the 300SD but I know it is working from the performance of the car.

So when you speak of the overboost solenoid, is that the same as the banjo bolt that gets clogged with soot? Or is that something else that is in that area? I am still new to a lot of this stuff
