190E with a 300sd diesel engine conversion?

I have a 86 190E 2.3 gasser that has a bad tranny and a tired engine but good body. Then I have a 81 300sd with a very strong motor and tranny but the body is falling apart. Question, would it be possible to install the 617 diesel motor out of my 300SD into the 190E? I'm sure its a pipe dream but that would solve some problems and make a awsome little 190 I think. Any comments are welcome, Thanks

I think the starter is on the wrong side and the engine/trans combo would be too big to fit in a 190....(you'd also need a 300SD 722.303 tranny to make it work).....so its likely a no, it would not work. Find another 190e engine or a diesel 190 engine (2.2 or 2.5/2.5turbo) that'd be a neat car.

I have seen a 124 with the 617 in it, so if you can do that you should be able to do it in a 190 I think. I am not saying it would be easy though, just that I think from the firewall forward the 190 and the 124 look very similar to me.

The 190 has a much smaller engine bay. The W124 has enough room for a 5L V8 but the W201 is cramped with an inline 5/6.
