Questions on AC conversions
I would like to get my AC back to r12. I took off the adaptor "plug" for the low side, and found the PO took out the middle of the "valve stem" (cant remember the name for it for the life of me, its the part that holds and releases pressure).
Can I go buy one made for a bike tube or something, or do I have to buy an assembly specific for the car? Sorry, im horrible with terms, let me know if further clarification is needed. Thanks! |

Go to an auto parts store and buy one.
If they don't have one try a auto AC shop. Dave

If you are in Chicago, let me know. I have a couple I bought during my conversion project.

They are called valve cores. Any automotive AC shop would have them. Heck they might even give them to you if you ask nice enough.

I am going to have to do the same thing on my '79 wagon, the place that performed the conversion didn't remove the compressor to flush it properly and R134A never worked right! it would ice up after a short time and stop cooling It finally quit after 16 months or so. To do the job properly you ought to consider replacing the compressor, or at least removing it to flush out the PAG oil it probably has in it as it certainly will crap up if it sees mineral oil again. A thorough flush is on the list for sure, as well as replacing the expansion valve (need to remove it to flush the system anyway).

Add receiver/dryer to the list. If your system has been open, and it was if you know that you have no valve cores, you will need a new one.

Great, thanks for all the input. Compressor has recently been replaced, and have a new drier ready to install

I would recommend that you replace both valve cores (high and low side) while you at it.

Be sure to get that POE or PAG completely out of the compressor if you're going to reuse it. Flushing the rest of the system is easy, but flushing the compressor is difficult.
I flushed the compressor for my '96 (factory 134a) with 64 oz of new DEC PAG-46 and the discharge oil was still green from the previous dye charge. That's half a gallon of oil and plenty of hours of work, and still old oil remained. I finally gave up and installed it. |
