How many hours between oil changes
Hi, My diesel SEC is done and about to become my daily driver, I promise a full detail buildup thread in the near future.
One of my current issues is I have no odometer, (speedo works but no odo), speedo is also from a w124 and does not read correctly However I have an hour meter installed, so What I would like to know is the recommended oil change interval for highway driving in hours. Does anyone else use an hour meter instead of a odometer.

I recommend 75 hours.

Based upon an average speed of 55 mph, the recommendation would be 55 hours for dino oil and 90 hours if you use synthetic oil.

When I drove my SD which had a dead odo I just did it every 6 months. I knew about what I was driving mileage wise. I usualy average 1k miles a month at most.

I have had International Harvester trucks since 1966. some where along the line I aquired a huge manual that covered just about everything.
I read somewhere in there that 35 miles equaled one hour of operation. Charlie

Or.. just do it by the fuel gauge -- change it every 8 tankfuls (8 tankfuls * 16gal/tanful * 25MPG = 3200mi). If you're doing lots of highway driving, you're probably getting >25MPG but its highwy miles.

Dog's simple solution to solve this dilemma: Reconnoitre 350 miles approx and yer tank's on last quarter ready for fill. Umm, yer fuel guage works dont it?? Thus 10 tanks of fuel deserves oil change!! Hence throw away the hour meter as bein near useless, mark notepad and/or stack fuel receipts, thats all ye gotta do.
Basically: each fillup x 10 = oil change....... nothin simpler than that. |

603's seem to fare much better with soot loading though.

Yeah, they are a newer design. You can go 10k miles with a good oil in a 603, and even more in a 606. MB specs 13k in the CDI's which is probably conservative.
With a 617 as Brian found out anything more than 5k is pushing it.
