I put sweet hydraulics on my 123

Okay, I didn't. But it sure feels like it. With my foot on the brake I put it in 'N' and the rear end pops up an inch or two, put it in 'R' and it pops up another 2-3. It clunks with each shift.

What the heck?

It's the torque of the transmission on the suspension. I'm sure there is a much more scientific or accurate explanation, but that's basically it.

You've discovered the "poor mans answer to sagging rear springs".

Put her in reverse, apply the park brake, throttle gently then hold the brake while the rear is in the air. Put in park to hold it up overnight.

You might have to do this for the next fifteen years to notice any improvement.

So the clunk sound is normal? I never noticed that before. A guy at work had mentioned he had a truck that would do that, and that it had a bad cv joint.

I don't think the clunk is normal. That would tell me that something has too much play.

Yeah. Methinks that would be a hard one to diagnose as well. I would assume the wheels need load to make the clunk sound, so I coldn't put the rear on jacks and shift it. have friend put parking brake on, stomp on brake pedal and I'll climb underneath as he shifts back and forth.... not going to happen!
It raises when it shifts to neutral... wouldn't there be no stress on the driveline in neutral?

From drive to neutral you're releasing pressure. You could do your test with the rear wheels on ramps.

Replace your rear subframe mounts.

The behavior of the the read end squatting down when put into drive and popping up when put into reverse means your differential mount is worn out. It's about a 30min job (6 bolts) to replace it once you have both rear wheels up off the ground safely.

I also heard the associated movement with shifting from P either N or R, or vice versa, was a normal thing even when the cars were new. How do you then determine if it's time to replace the differential mount?

Put her in drive, hold down the brake, and rev. She'll dance
