Does anyone have the special M-B lower ball joint puller (210, 202, 208 170)

I got stuck and can't separate the lower part of the lower ball joint on my E300. I can order the tool from M-B but wondered if anyone had one to loan/rent? It is PN 202 589 02 33 00 and PN 140 589 00 63 00 for the thrust piece. I've tried all sorts of other tools and techniques (heat, pullers, pickle forks) but can't break it free.

Have you tried backing off the nuts several turns & then hitting the JOINT directly with a 3 pound hammer??

Yeah, I tried that one too, nothing worked. I sprayed it with PB, heated it with a torch, used a pulley puller that worked on the other side but it slipped off this side and even tried a fork but couldn't get the right angle on it without a lift so I am stuck waiting for the tool.

Three minutes with the right tool and the old BJ was out. I will say this, if anyone wants to make this job easy use only the M-B puller...it will save you a lot of time, trouble, and in my case a mashed finger. Thankfully one of our members loaned me the tool and I didn't have to buy it, though I would have if I ever imagined I would be doing this job ever again.

Congrats! Do you think that tool would work on a W124, W211, or W116?

You don't need that special tool on a W124 or W211. You might need a special tool, but that one won't help.

The best thing to do is consult the WIS or service manual...even alldata has the sections on these types of repairs.

They will tell you what special tools are recommended and the PN for the tool which can be ordered from any dealer. They aren't always required (for example, I was able to remove one side using a generic pulley puller but the other side was too stuck and the puller kept slipping).

So the moral to the story is use the tool they make if you want to make your life easier. I'd still have the use of my right ring finger if I had just used the right tool instead of whacking away with a sledge hammer (which, by the way will smash a fingertip very well even if it doesn't budge a ball joint). Fortunately it looks like it will heal up just fine so it wasn't a real bad experience, just another lesson learned.
