Fuel lines by the meter???

Hello,

In replacing my fuel filters today, I noted that the short run between the inline prefilter and the IP was severely degraded. The rest of the line wasnt much better...

So its time to replace. Ive searched but havent seen the exact specs on the line I need... From the hard line to the prefilter and the prefilter to the IP, what is the spec (ID and OD, I suppose) of the fuel line that I need for an 81 240D?

Also, Id like to get the original cloth-covered line. It seems that fastlane has it but it is only sold by the $100 roll. I need 1-2ft.

What is the recommended source for original cloth covered fuel line sold by the foot/meter?

Thanks,

JMH

MB and Fastlane have the "braided return line" that you want. It is sold by the dealer by the meter.

Using clear viton line from fryerpower.com has some merit as it ought to never need changing again AND you can see through it in the event air is in the lines which is helpful in tracking down the leak.

You could by some fuel line at napa or other local parts store and buy a connector to join them

I saw looping return line, but no spec for the ID, and it looks like it is for the injector returns...

What is the correct ID/OD for the fuel hose that goes from the hard line to the IP via the prefilter?

I like the idea of the viton lines, but it appears that all the ones sold at fryerpower are the small lines from injector to injector, etc. It appears that those lines have a smaller ID/OD than the fuel line that goes from the tank to the IP via the prefilter. I think that is a 7.5mm ID, but Im not positive, and the lines on mine are so cracked, I wouldnt trust any measurement...

THanks,

JMH

Thanks!

JMH

I believe that line is 5/16 in inches. Can't recall the mm size.

If the lines in the engine compartment are bad, the lines from the tank are probably bad too. Here's a thread with instructions as to how to empty the tank to replace those lines:

Emptying the fuel tank

As suggested by Kerry the hoses by the plastic pre-filter/primary filter can be replaced with regular 5/16 of an inch fuel line that you can get by the foot at most auto parts stores. Thats what I have on my car. If you want another type of hose you could put the regular hose on now and shop around for the hose that you really want till you get a good price and availability on it.
The hard plastic hoses that go to and from the Fuel Injection Pump can be replaced with 1/4 inch fuel hose. However, you need to put clamps on them and be careful how you position the clamps.
The fuel hoses by the tank can also be replaced in the same manner except that the fuel outlet hose up by the tank has a crimped collar around one end. I drained the tank and unscrewed that hose and filed off the metal collar and when the new hose was put on just used a clamp.

See a discussion of hose types that will withstand any fuel including biodiesel here. I recently bought some Parker hose from Vulcan Performance. Hose rated for "fuel injection" has an inner lining that is fuel rated, Goodyear is one manufacturer. This is discussed in detail in the referenced thread.

7.5 mm and 5/16 inch are basically the same i.d. size. If you really gotta have the 7.5 mm stuff, Performance Products sells it by the meter, although I have no idea if it is the original cloth covered hose.

On both my 603 and old 617 all the rubber fuel lines were/are 5/16.

I'd get Conti lines from Fastlane or the dealer if you want it to last.
