If you bought your car on eBay you should know it gets 35-45mpg, 60mpg if you use GreenBenz's hydrogen system.

MPG measurement is easy but it won't work if you partially fill the tank.

I dont trust the odometers, i simply calculate how many miles it is from my house to my job and back (assuming that i go nowhere else,) Fill my car up to the brim and when i run out ill know how many MPG im getting.

I have a scangauge that taps into the OBD port, and it covers in real time about 15 different engine and electrical functions. It also has a trip computer, and fuel usage option. Along with that, and other methods spoken about by the other posters, I am able to see exactly what my milage is.

I use Excel to input in the amount as recorded on the fuel receipt along with the odometer reading. I calculate the "instant" MPG for each tank and then use a three point moving average to give me an average MPG over the last three fill-ups. This helps to give a more reliable figure. I also calculate an average for the entire length of ownership of the car for an overall average.

Other figures:

Price/mile fuel $0.15
Operational Cost/mile (fuel plus maintenance/mile) $0.41
Savings per fill-up versus my last car (VW GTI GLS 5-sp)
Projected fuel cost/month
Projected next fill-up date.

I plot to show performance over time on most of these values.

You don't happen to have this in an excel spreadsheet that you'd be willing to share do you? I, for one, will give full credit to the author if I ever pass it on.

Here you go. I hope it works, I keep my sheet in Appleworks and exported it to Excel. It includes an automatic chart, total miles traveled, total gallons consumed, average $/gallon, total fuel costs and average MPG.

The one thing I don't understand is everyone isn't driving there car until it runs out of fuel.

Is everyone waiting until it sounds different or bogs out?

No need. The tank is a fixed volume, as long as you fill to the same point you can go any distance.

i actually drive it until i cannot drive anymore, i just keep a spare jug in the tank and pull over to the side, remmeber where i am and then continue on.
