Running on Hydraulic Fluid

I was speaking to my father, who has a large quantity of hydraulic fluid, and he was suggesting that I try running my 84 300 tdt wagon on it. What do you guys think? I know if you're in trouble, and only have ATF on hand, you can use that... but I'm sure there are some NEGATIVE side effects.

What did the oil come out of?

From what I've read, you pretty much need to convert the vehicle to run on hydraulic/ATF the same as you would for veggie oil or waste motor oil (WMO). All of them are thicker than diesel, so to run on it straight the oil needs to be heated so that it will atomize and burn completely.

Otherwise you run the risk of carbon deposits building up on your injectors, valves, rings, and in the prechambers. You'll probably want to heat the supply to your IP too in order to avoid overstressing it pumping the higher viscosity oil.

You'll also want to pre-filter it down to 1 or 2 microns, and it would probably also be a good idea to use some strong magnets in/on the filtering setup to get even the tiniest ferrous metal particles out.

Not much you can do about any ialuminum, brass, bronze or other metal particles that your prefiltering system doesn't catch. But particles of non-ferrous metals that small won't do nearly as much the damage as they would if they were steel or iron since they aren't as hard....

Of course you can always run it mixed with your regular fuel to thin it out...

The oil came out of a steel bending/cutting machine. I was considering diluting it with standard pump diesel.

atf has shown to coke the injectors, suspect to get more carbon build up quicker and more smoke out the tail pipe.

The type of oil makes a big difference as well. Mineral/synthetic oil will not do good things to the engine.

If you can find out the manufacture of the oil you can determine the content. Hyrdraulic oil made with +90% mineral oil probably is not going to be a good choice for alternative fuels. However there has been a trend of producing Hydraulic fluid with Rape Seed oil which would work like any WVO.

I have burned about 100 gallons of tellus32 through my Ford. Intend to run in the Benz as soon as the trans is back together. Run 50/50 year around.
