If you really want a durable car, look at what poor Africans drive. Check out any video footage of African street scenes and you'll notice 80's Peugeots and Japanese pickups everywhere. Some Benzes. All diesel, of course.
I really liked my 504, great car, it was a problem getting parts . Theres allot of French influence in Africa, so maybe folks have Peugeots "parts houses" there. The seats were ultra comfy and I loved the manual tranny.

I enjoyed my old Piggout, however, getting parts was a hassle even 25 years ago when dealers still existed.

There was a Peugeot 505 diesel sedan in my family for 17 years. Parents bought it new in 1981. On our very first road trip the aux fan didn't work, and with the A/C on, the engine kept overheating. The sunroof belt broke right after that. Alternator failed shortly thereafter. Had numerous problems with lights & window motors failing on the right side of the car. I think the real weakness in Peugeot is the electrical! Everything else was quite reliable.

The Peugeot had the best seats ever, excellent shock absorbers, a very reliable & peppy engine and was quite fun to drive. Parts & service though became quite difficult to get in the 1990's. The water pump went out & head gasket failed (common problem on Peugeot diesels) so my mom sold it; the new owner (who we knew) repaired it, then engine then "blew" a few thousand miles later. Don't know any more details other than they replaced it with a turbo engine and sold it again. I recently saw that car on Craiglist, around $800 - heh, I should have bought it back

My 240D is even more fun to drive and my friends think it's a beautiful car, where they ridiculed the Peugeot.

All & all though, in retrospect, I really liked the car. The 505 wagons are nice & roomy, and much nicer than the 504 wagons IMHO. Just no SLS suspension like the 300TD. Don't let your Peugeot diesel overheat - ever; feed it good fuel & oil, and it should be just fine. Then again, that's good advice for any engine.

huh? not quite, the PRV6 as its commonly called (peugeot renault volvo) came in a bunch of cars, peugeots renaults and volvos of course, but also Eagle Premiers, and of course the Delorean DMC-12. Never any Saabs though, the only V6 they got was from the Opel Omega (Caddy Catera in the US).

edit: of course this is all besides the point, as the PRV is a gas engine, not a diesel.

1. Take the MB... Watch it slowly oxidize and rust away in the school parking lot, not driven much or too little time for maint. Expensive to insure, drive, and maintain for the year I've had it. I don't want to have it turn to crap and lose value by lack of care. I might be able to break even if I sold it this summer. I would use the car for puttering around town and highway trips.
2. Buy a fun Euro car (Sonnet, Peugeot turbo-diesel, etc) that I would enjoy the few times I drive it per week and driving home for weekends. And less expensive, so I wouldn't care how much as it rots.
3. Go Uber-Cheap and get a beater Crown Vic, use the car as an appliance. Run the car into the ground!

Storing the MB during college is probably not an option with my parents. It would be an option that would take up their garage space and annoy them.
I like the MB, but the costs for it add up and I won't have the time or money to deal with it during college. It might be best to sell my car and get something I wouldn't be concerned about sitting in the parking lot.

During college I had a 1982 toyota tercel and then a 1990 plymouth sundance. Do not take a car that you care anything about. Most of the kids where I went to school didn't have cars, and I was pretty much the bus driver. One time we put 8 of us in the sundance and drove over 40 miles on the highway. Also, don't take a car that needs maintenance, that's the last thing you need to worry about.

Buy the crown vic.

Good luck in school.

This is correct. The engine was also the basis of the Renault F1 turbo engines. The bottom end of the engine resembles a cosworth Indy engine in the way that there is a main bearing girdle that goes across the entire block and attaches the main bearing caps continuously to the bottom edge of the block with a smallish 3" square opening to drain oil down into the sump which is down low like a benz.

I had one in a volvo 265. It was a sweet engine that moaned on acceleration and had a sweet broad torque band like a benz motor. It was reputed to have cam problems but was no problem for me as I changed the 20w50 valvoline oil at about 2000 miles as a precaution.

It also had a very small crankcase ventilation tube (about .25" d) which once clogged up and caused milky condensation in the oil.

Best use for Pug wheels ever!

I have always like the look of the Pugs.

I built this Subaru in 2004 and had a blast with it. 4" lift with a 2.2 Legacy engine mated to a dual range hi low transmission. Best use of a steel 14" pug wheel ever.
