...and asks whether the gauge reading between 0-1 bar is bad.

Is there any hope she hasn't blown the engine? Its an 83 240D, and according to reports the gauge and engine noise improved after adding oil and then got worse again after driving, I'm not sure how far prob. 25-30 miles. I've read several posts concerning blockages in the oil pickup inside the filter housing, and possibly a bad pressure relief valve and/or oil pump.

Its at an indy mechanic who seems to know his old mercedes but I want to be able to advise him where to look in case its an intermittent prob. My knees are sore from all the praying I've been doing lately that the engine isn't toast.

Pull the filter and tear it apart looking for metal is all I can recommend.

ok. I'll see what the shop says and report back. I wish I could check a number of things myself but I'm 500 miles from the car.

The real question is did 3 qts. bring it to the proper fill mark, or not; and then how often she checks it and how much it is using.

I can't verify how much was added, but I've owned the car for almost a year and it doesn't really use oil. Maybe a quart between changes and it does leak. Partially from the oil filter housing, and partially from various places. It seems to have less blowby than my 85 300D. This was a sudden condition/symptom and I don't think she realized the seriousness of low oil pressure.

If your car has the small metal oil pan like the 617s do the Indy can drain the oil and pull the pan and look for metal prticles.

Sadly I cannot get my Wife to assume more responsibilty for a car than starting it, using the brakes, keeping fuel in it and hosing the care down ounce in awhile. After that She has little interest in the car.
I put my homemade version of an oil pressure alarm on the car (as several other members have). I can only hope she will respond to the alarm if the oil pressure drops.

Last time my wife added oil it cost $2100 to fix.....

Why is that a woman can tell you what sweater she wore on the second date when you first met but cant tell you how long the oil light has been flashing?

I would have been more than happy to buy her a toyota or honda, but either fortunately or unfortunately she has good taste, and won't drive a newer car. The 240D has been very reliable and fairly efficient to boot until now. I also paid alot more than I should have to find her a mercedes with a manual transmission. (insert whip sounds here)

Its not all girls.. I have one friend who fixes her own car, changed an alternator, in-tank fuel pump, brakes, and spark plugs that I know of, she just hates getting greasy so she calls me to do some of the dirtier jobs...

Yeah but even weirder is tryin to buy female owned car. You wont get straight answer for anything and maintenance is crap-shoot. Practically nothing a woman says about cars is believable. It's like dealing with deaf, dumb and blind.

Geez, between this and the salesman in Pep Boys today, I'm starting to feel a little run-down by the male world. I went in to buy a new socket for the headlamp of my dad's van (GM junk corroded beyond belief) and the guy tells me they don't have any, but I might find a junkyard that has one and "get my husband or boyfriend to splice it on."

I'll admit though that most women really make no effort to know what's going on under the hood. I guess most guys don't either, but women almost seem PROUD of how little they know about cars. I don't expect other women to be as obsessed with their car as I am, but really, how hard is it to know that engine oil is vital, or that gasoline and diesel are not interchangeable? Maybe I'm a genius.

I don't know about your IQ, but if it is any consolation, I have read dozens of your posts over the last 2-3 months and never had any idea you are female. On a 99% male dominated board like this. I think that says a LOT about your mechanical savvy...

I was reading down this thread and started wondering what Sunny or Cecily would be thinking as they read some of this. Sure enough, one out of two had already responded.

Sunny I bet would have a more aggressive response.

I kind of like my wife knowing nothing about cars, or caring. Less we have to talk about.....

lol, -inserts foot in mouth- If i were to find a woman who i could work on my car with. I would have to propose to her on the spot. Anyways, its more of yknow, its just something to gets you from point a to point b kind of thing, Not how we veiw it, we see it as "Ok, no oil your going to spin your bearings, then you will ruin the crankshaft, then the cylinder walls will go, and then your top end will melt because of the lack of lubrication." The way people that dont know see it is, "Oh, it wont go without that."
