I wish that in school everyone was required to take a class where they learned how their car, common household appliances, plumbing and such worked. Not of course to train them to be mechanics/repair persons but to help them use things more safely and to help them avoid getting ripped off by repair persons. Two houses down lived a girl (a good friend for 35 years or so) I grew up with. Her Father was very mechanically and electrically inclined. More importantly her spent a lot of time teaching her a good deal of what he knew and I was often there with them learning myself. Maybe knowing from her example that Women have the ability in this area if what I find frustrating with my Wife concerning cars. When she is off driving there is a little worry spot in the back of my mind. Will she make the right decision if something goes wrong with the car?

quick update... Called the shop and thus far the mercedes mechanic with 31 years experience has been unable to get the key to turn in the ignition. Not a good omen. Sounds like the tow truck driver fubared the switch.
Now back to our regularly scheduled debate on gender and technical aptitude and/or indifference.

I completely support the high school class that educates on how plumbing and automobiles work... but I'd not assume that it was only the female population that needed the course. I think people would sleep through it though... the average person out there of either gender has no idea how things work and doesn't want to know. |

I think if they made everyone take classes like autoshop and plumbing, there would be a lot of girls mad at their GPA dropping because they flunked the oil checking and tire changing exam. I suppose since I flunked the General Music course in sixth grade, that I would not expect a gir, or guy for that matter to give a crap about what is taught in that class and to make an A. I have a friend from high school who put a huge hump in the back seat floor area by putting the jack in the wrong spot on his Saturn. This is only after he drove miles with a flat he didn't know about and shredded the tire. He is also the guy who did not know how to put air in the tire and eventually locked up his motor due to never checking or changing the oil. As for my girlfriend, I have a hard time getting her to understand that a 23 year old car takes lots of time to keep it maintained. I also have to force her to get the oil changed and have her tires rotated and balance to save her money on prematurly worn tires on her ML. When we were friends, she would drive up in her VW and it sounded like a diesel. Sure enough, it was 3 qts low on oil!!

I'm not blaming gender, I was just commenting on how the thread got hijacked and turned into a commentary on it. I fully agree that there are ample populations of males and females respectively that are shockingly clueless about all kinds of things vital to their continued welfare. My roommate, who, in most respects is intelligent and successful, pulled into the driveway a few months ago with a clattering engine and when I asked him if there was any oil in it, responded with a confused look. He realized I meant the noise, and said yeah it'd been doing that for about a week and a half. We added 4 quarts of oil. Capacity, 4.9 quarts.

update
...it was the oil filter housing. Apparently oil was just pouring out the top of it. And she never noticed when she added the oil that the whole upper right hand corner of the engine bay was coated with black wetness. sigh. The mechanic replaced the O-ring, added four qts. of oil and drove the car, said it had good oil pressure. I asked whether there was any way to diagnose potential damage to the bearings and he said he thought it would be fine. And that it was hard to tell. Any thoughts from the forum on this?

You could pull the lower oil pan an look for bearing shavings.

If any engine can survive such an event, the OM616 is it.
I'm curious to know what oil pressure is now at hot idle vs prior to running low. If no difference, put it out of your mind. Sixto 87 300D |

You can also invest in an oil analysis but I'm not sure what it would be worth without a baseline.
