How to read CE light codes? 1999 E300D

1999 E300D W210

Is there an on-board way to read CE light codes ...or do I need to get an OBD-II code reader to do it ?>

You need the OBDII scanner to read simple engine/emission related codes and something much more complicated (ie: shop quality scanner/laptop) to read trans, srs, abs, etc codes.
