Loud sreeching sound when accelerating...
Hello,
I've noticed in the last couple months, Sometimes, when I accelerate, there is a horrible screeching sound that stays constant while I accelerate. When I'm not stepping on the gas, it goes away. Sometime is will go away when I'm turning or for seemingly no reason. Any obvious answer for this? Thanks |

Usually the alternator belt. Rub some bar soap on it as a belt dressing to test. You should not be able to turn the alternator pulley by hand using the cooling fins. Adjust belt if loose or change if glazed bad.

The model/year would help, but my first guess would be a loose or worn belt.

I agree with the belts. You will need to take care of this right away as the alternator belts also turn the waterpump.
To tighten the alternator belt first loosen the three bolts holding the alternator inthe bracket then tighten the adjusting bolt (the long bolt with the inch long nut on it)

Isn't that long bolt an eccentric bolt? Turning it tightens or loosens the belt tension?

What model and year of car do you have? Two different tensioners depending on type of a/c compressor.
Doh, never mind, missed the car info

I just went through this problem recently. After replacing the alternator, belt and tensioning it, I now have a screaming water pump. It never ends.

I have the same problem but think its the tensioner pulley on my 95 E300. Water temp is fine, goes up a little sitting in traffic- right back down on cruising.

It can also be an ehxaust manafold leak. It will scream under boost conditions. Had an OLD diesel powered UPS truck that I drove and it sounded like the turbo was running without oil. The mechanic would tighten up the ehxaust manafold to the head. Also check the manafold to turbo.
