New record - 775 miles on one tank!

The fill up took 22.1 gallons, so theoretically I could make the mythical 800 mile tank at some point. The '95 E300D's have the 90 liter tank (23.77 gallons) so I could have made the 800 with 25 miles to spare.

Of course no one really wants to suck out the last liter or two of fuel, who knows what's down there in the bottom of the tank!

But for some reason my car is getting better mileage lately, I think it's a combination of filling up with fuel which is somewhat cooler temperature (can feel the nozzle get cool while I'm filling) and very hot weather (+/- 90) which seems to improve the engine efficiency slightly. I track every tank, normal mileage is 33 - 33.5, now running about 35.

Rgds,
Chris W.
265K, needs every mile possible with fuel at $4.79!

The fuel pickup is at the bottom of the tank.

I really missed the range on my old '95 E300D (700-750 miles was rather easy), but I hated the lack of power on the highway. When I got caught in a "gotta go fast now" situation, I was screwed every time.

Was the 90 liter tank available as an option or retrofit to older W124 models? My '87 has the 70 liter tank; larger would be better.

Is there a 90 liter bladder option to go with the 90 liter tank upgrade? If I have to drain one tank every 500 miles, I might as well fill the other

Can a 124 gasser tank be adapted to serve as a Diesel tank?

The 90 liter tank is a bolt-in replacement for the 70 liter tank, the only downside is that the 90 liter tank intrudes about 5-6 inches back into the trunk somewhat reducing trunk capacity. The panel in front of the tank also mounts a bit differently and you might have to drill some new holes to install it in the correct location. The fuel sender is the same on both tanks.

I bought a 90 liter tank from PGA in Frederick, MD and retrofitted in my 91 300D, my personal best tank was 804 miles.

Thanks, Tim. What is "PGA?"

I'd also like to have a larger tank in our '96 E300D but that is a W210 car, a different animal. It comes with a very small tank, only 16 or 17 gallons.

Sixto, "bladder late than never." To use a gasser tank you might have to solder in a return line; I don't know if gasoline fuel injection systems have return lines. Otherwise it might work.

I don't see a strainer as a service item in gasser tanks so that's a minus. It certainly wouldn't be plug-n-play.

Jeremy - You should be able to put a later W210 tank in yours. Mines 80L or 21.1 gals; I believe that became a standard in 98.

Potomac German Auto Recyclers - they are a large Mercedes used parts dealer.

Unless you have a 500E tank, which was also a 90 liter why bother? -IIRC the W124 gasser is also a 70 liter tank.

Am I missing something?

I'm more complete now with confirmation that no mortal 124 gasser has a bigger tank

I think my '96 has that tank (it takes almost 20 gallons after going near empty). Was that an option for the '96 model year? It certainly takes more than what the owner's manual specifies.

OK, so if one is searching a junkyard personally or on line through a recycler or used parts dealer, how would one know that a fuel tank is one size or another? I wouldn't know to look at one and I'm not sure the dealers would keep track of a detail like that.

I suppose the part number, if it could be found, would tell the tale, but it would be nice if there were a clue such as the "intrudes back into the trunk" that Tim made earlier. Any specific giveaways for 124s or 210s or whatever?
