That's very useful! I've seen a W116 diesel in a local junkyard.

GregZ, is the 380 SL, speedo cable or electronic. is the oil pressure mechanical or electrical.

since you are using the auto trans, you may only have to change the rear yolk on the trans, you will need a 30mm 12 point deep shaft socket.

you should be able to find a trans crossmember that will just bolt in, then just connect the trans wiring, the shift lever and speedo and that parts done.

Icefire: you mean in the case that the SL is mechanical, right? If it is I may just swap out the speedo (odo) and apply the oil pressure sensor to the oil pressure line. My 380SEC had almost the same engine and the oil pressure was electronic. Anyway, useful info. Thanks!

Did you swap out the ignition switch or did you wire (electrical and vacuum) a solenoid to shut off the engine?

I tried to put a 617 engine into my 380 SL today. There seem to be two huge problems:
1. The steering gear hits on the oil filter housing and does not let the engine go any further left (would need about one more inch). The solution seems to be the removal of the oil filter housing (moving it up 5-6 inches). Although doable, this probably is more work than I want to do.
2. Even if the steering rack would let the engine go more towards the left the compressor hits the bracket that holds the swingarm to the cradle. I do not see an easy work around, other than raising the front of the engine which would probably put too much stress on the flex joint. (I do not want to remove the compressor).

Bummer...

A 617 out of a 115 might have the filter in a more agreeable location. I don't know if York/Tecumseh type compressor fits a turbo engine.

A member hear (rover something) makes an adaptor plate to relocate the oil filter housing.
