Engine Removal Question! Help Appreciated!
We're in the process of pulling the dead motor/trans on our project car, and I was wondering if that large crossmember/support bar under the engine (the one between the two guide rod supports) needs to be removed in order to remove or install the engine. Can it be left in or should it be removed?

No it does not need to be removed. What I would suggest to you after removing an engine just last week,is to remove the engine first, then remove the transmission. Not much needs to be removed in fact only the engine radiator, engine oil cooler, and the fan blades come off.If you would like I can send you pictures of our little project of engine removal done last week.
Good luck Dan Vancouver Canada EH!!

Its out! The load leveler makes it possible!
Its currently sitting on the driveway (the complete unit) Our replacement trans is suspect so we're probably going to look into getting the old one rebuilt instead. And, it looks like its been out before, as the TOP TWO BOLTS that secure the trans and engine together, are not there!!! Guess they took the easy way out of that one! So we'll get them separated now and then we have to bring back our rental hoist....then we can look into having the trans tested/rebuilt. Fun job though!

In taking apart more stuff on the motor it has become readily apparent that some extremely poor mechanics did work on it. The boost line was held in place with a rubber vacuum connector, the starter support bracket was missing, the tranny line was patched with rubber hose.....the list goes on.

If you need to seal the tranny line try solder or brazing. I soldered mine about a week ago and stopped the leak. I skipped putting the bracket on (which is what originaly chaffed it through anyway)

The bracket only chafes the line because the rubber bushing disnintegrates.

Wow thats really lazy, those two top bolts are pretty easy to get at.

Yeah, removing and installing a mercedes engine is a peice of cake compared to installing it into my honda civic.. good god they squeeze them in there..

But if they did removed the engine, you should check the Russian VIN site to see the the block and trans serial numbers match with the VIN.

We'll look into the tranny next week....we'll probably get it rebuilt. Then we can begin the reconstruction process. We also have to order an oil cooler line, a tranny hard line, and a few other things....so the delay is ok...we're in no rush to get it on the road...its the spare project car....and it will never be driven in the winter either. (It never has been)
