exhaust pipe won't come off the turbo

I need to get the pipe that connects to the turbo off. The flange is off and all of the hangers are disconnected but it still won't come off. It does not appear to be welded togther.

It's probably stuck together with carbon from the exhaust stream. I suggest gentle tapping with a hammer to loosen the connection. You don't say whether you mean the intake to the turbo from the exhaust manifold or the exit to the exhaust pipe.

I presume you have had the trap cat recall performed?

It's the exit to the exhaust pipe. I have tried tapping it with a hammer, and applied a porta power to it, still no go.

Time for the BernzOmatic and big hammer.

dunno if I'd go4 the BFH around the turbo.

if it won't come off w/ porta power...

How do you apply a Porta Power to the mm's gap between the turbo exhaust flange and the downpipe?

Stick a 2x2 into it and rock it off.

I still think hitting the exhaust pipe near the bell fitting with a steel hammer is your best bet.

Been there, done that. Didn't work.
A piece of wood in the pipe wrenched around will take it off quickly and easily.

sixto 07-03-2008 06:10 PM

Won't the flex section keep movement/leverage from getting to the stuck fitting?

I've taken a few off, knocked the pipe around with a big rubber mallet until it came loose. A block of wood might work also.

Johnhef 07-03-2008 06:22 PM

Yeah I used dead blow hammer to knock it off while prying at it from underneath on mine.

babymog 07-03-2008 06:26 PM

Two persuaders I really love having: a big rubber mallet, and a brass mallet (or lead).

charmalu 07-03-2008 09:10 PM

Same here, I have used a 3# rubber dead blow. also used a brass drift on
the edge of the pipe at the turbo and knocked it towards the firewall.
they get stubborn with the rust and soot build up, almost like it welded.

I wonder if taking the mount off the transmission will give some movement. just be careful of the flex joint wiggling the pipe from underneith. It will crack.

Is the flex pipe on a w123 supposed to be welded on?
I have some noise from there sounds like a VW kinda.
