OM617 Brake Master Cylinder Color - Gold?
Just swapped mine and the replacement part is gold. Isn't the original black? Are they just not painting them black any more?

yes they were black from the factory. The unit is probably rebuilt and the gold color is what the rebuilder uses for all of them. I'd be surprised if its cad.

I doubt its cad, cad is enviromentally unfriendly and expensive. Rarely used today except military and space/nasa. It is probably zinc plated. If its all discolored and looks ugly after a year, its zinc for sure.

P.S. if you want to keep it looking original, take a peice of sandpaper and a wire brush and rough up the surface. Then use POR15 and brush the black on. Make sure you cover up the engine compartment!!!
Because the POR15 can be brushed on, its easier and cleaner than spraying and once it dries (assuming you do good prep work and follow all directions), it wont leave brushmarks and will look original. The aftermarket master cylinders dont have the MB star wheras the originals do, this is kind of a dead givaway that its been replaced. Use BLUE painters tape to cover the brake lines so you dont get paint on them. The brake fluid will eventaully eat por15 if left on long enough, so if you ever splash brake fluid, wipe off as soon as you can or it will eat it. Just a tip... Can you tell I am a purist/restorer? lol... |

Thank you all for the advice. I'll put some POR15 on it, but I absolutely refuse to put POR15 on my teeth and chains.... :-)
