'Clacking' noise only on turns???

Hey all!

On my '78 240D, there is a metallic clacking on turns that SEEMS to be coming from my front end, I think the right hand side. Now I know CV joints can make this noise on FWD cars when they go bad. Is there any common problems on these cars that could cause this?? Bearings?? I haven't jacked it up yet to have a better look but it is bothering me.

Thanks a lot!

A front wheel bearing could do it too.

Once again, thank you all for your replies. Is there an easy way to check the CV axles? The boots are intact for the most part. I am leaning towards wheel bearings though. Is jacking up the front end and spinning the tire(s) the only way to check them?

jack the front of the car up and spin them, and then take them and try to do the "wobble" test. For cv-joints raise one side up in the air and spin the tire.
