Hood insulation glue

Anyone know if spray contact cement will work for the hood pad, or do I have to go thru MB and get the 'tar' they use. thanks

I used 3M Trim Adhesive on mine and it's working fine. I works like contact cememnt. You spray both surfaces, let them dry, and then stick them together. Most auto parts stores have it.

If you can get the 3M Super 77 Proffesional adhesive -- Cover you windshield before using. Don't ask how I know this.

Thats a better glue; it is also very stinky stuff. Pay attention of you have any pilot lights (hot water, dryer, etc.) nearby too.

Yeah, mine seemed pretty adept at finding the few tiny spots that I didn't have covered up completely. Anybody know what you use to clean it off with?

3M Super Trim Adhesive 08090. It's made for this type of job.

It's stronger than the Super 77.

I had to buy it online. Here's the cheapest I can find it:

http://www.tcpglobal.com/AutoBodyDepot/ItemDetail.aspx?ItemNo=MMM+8090

$13.14 per can.

to clean off the over spray, go to an automotive paint supply like PPG or DUPONT.
get the wax and grease remover. it is sort of like mineral spirits, but is used to wipe down the vehicle to remove silicone, wax, oil etc... before sanding and painting.

I have used it for removing adhesives, tar and other schtuff.

I second that. I used a can of super 77 that I had around the house first and my hood pad fell off over-night. It has been holding for a year now with the 8090 stuff.

Another (easier) option is Liquid Nails. Two or three of the smaller-size tubes are plenty for one hood pad. Works great, even in high heat areas (FL, TX, AZ, etc). I've heard that this stuff can be hard to remove but I don't plan on changing the pad a second time, lol. I've done 3 or 4 this way so far. No worries about overspray, either. Only hassle is you need to press the new pad into the adhesive beads by hand, all over, and this takes more effort than you might think. But you can re-position the pad if necessary. The 3M Super spray will probably stick on contact, the downside being you have little if any time to re-position the pad if you didn't get it located perfectly.

I've used the 8090 stuff on two cars (123 and 124) with excellent results. It's possible to do a hood pad with one can but I used 1-1/2 just to be on the safe side. For the 123, I removed the hood and put it upside down on sawhorses in the driveway; the 124 I did on the car. "Cover everything" is the best possible advice; you don't want to find out the hard way how well this stuff sticks.
