improving mileage in my cummins dodge

I am going to look into a chip, a gear change in the diff and a gear vendors overdrive unit.

anybody have firsthand experience with any of these and ther mileage improvments possible?

Oh, yeah, I have been driving slower and short shifting and skipping gears. It all helps a bit.

Tom, What kinda mpg is it doing now? My old '92 1 ton still gets above 20. Best yet was 24.7 mpg GPS verified.
It's the most uncomfy ride of any thing i've ever driven. No AC, looks like hell but is very dependable and gets nearly as good a mileage as the SD.
I've turned the fuel up a bit and have opened up the exhaust. Other than that it's stock with maybe 400K miles. Just a basic old truck.

Mine is stock with 373 gears.

If I drive 62 I can get 22 hiway.

Towing with my big rig and driving about the same I got 13.

A ring and pinion is available that would give 331 ratio, which is about 12% and might net about 2 mpg.

Chips are availalbe but so far I have not found much reliable information about actual savings in fuel. mOst seem to cater to more power.

Gear vendors are bout $3000 but I don't know what ratios are available (20% ?)

The simplist of course is a chip.

But again, I don't find much info.

I would think that with a six speed, you wouldn't need more gears. Maybe a taller rear. Do you know the ratios of that tranny?

Tom, I have an '07, 5.9 and I have a Smarty Jr programmer. It plugs into the OBD port and reprograms the ECM on the truck. You have 3 settings, 40hp, 70hp, and 100hp. It also changes fuel timing which helps mileage. I get my best mileage on the 70hp setting. It can be put back to stock any time you want. It is also undetectable if you still have warranty. I LOVE mine!!! I also have a 6spd stick. The Cummins gets its best economy at just under 2,000rpm.
Roktech makes a crank timing pickup that just advances the fuel timing. They are inexpensive.
22mpg isn't shabby! I would watch that you don't over gear the rear axel. You could lose mpg. PM me if you need contacts

My friend got the Bullydog computer for his Chevy 2500HD. Its nice because you can go in and play with things, like when we tow his boat he firms the trans shift's right up and it does nice.

Since its gas you can pic the octane you want to run, and play with the settings depending on what you are going for. HP or mileage.
