Replacing Starter in 87 300D, Need Help
 

Im trying to replace starter, I have it unbolted but I cant seem to remove it from engine compartment. It wont fit between block and massive steering linkage.

Do I need to remove the steering linkage to get this out? Is there some trick to doing this, like unbolting motor mount and partially moving engine to get it to give birth to a 20 lb greasy broken starter motor?

Don't know about the 87's but on the 123's you typically have to move the front wheels all the way to the right and then snake out the starter thru the linkages.

Another person with no experence on your type. On the 123 I just dropped the idler arm. Large bolt with nut. That allowed me to pivot all linkage obstruction aside to remove and install the starter easily. In theory it was possible to squeeze it by the linkage as Kerry mentions with the wheel cranked. Two much of a jigsaw puizzle when I could pull the idler arm pivot in less than a minute and have all kinds of room.

I have replaced two in 1987's. It will come out. Try moving the steering so the arm moves out of the way. I think in came out vertically and upside down if I remember right.

Got it out, thanks for all info.

Turn steering to right to clear steering linkage and it drops out upside down. New reman unit a bit smaller so it went in easier.

Also have to rewire solenoid lead on the reman since its bigger shank than the OEM screw.
