Diesel Kleen, Diesel Purge, Naptha, Xylene, Toluenol?

All of these diesel additives have my head spinning.

From what I can tell, most of them are Naptha based solutions. From Diesel Kleen to Stanadyne Pump Additive.

Can't something similar be brewed off a hardware store shelf for much cheaper than these guys are charging?

'Who's the resident organic/and/petroleum chemist?

Sure you might be able to...

Pep Boys stocks RedLine Synthetic Diesel Fuel Catalyst $6.++ in the empty tank
and done.

You can put cat pee in the tank and it will probably have the same psychological effects as the off the shelf additives. If cost is your main worry, I wouldn't use any additives at all. Plain diesel will do no harm.

I agree with what forced said, except biodiesel will clean everything out in your system better than any additive will ever do.

So, between the lines, these additives/fuel treatments/whatever do absolutely nothing?

ForcedInduction 07-10-2008 03:12 AM

Yes, B5-B20 BioDiesel is much better than any additive you can buy off the shelf.

There is a time and place for useful additives such as antigel in sub-zero weather and biocide for a fungi infection. Cetane boosters, injector cleaners and mileage improvers all have a low return value for what little they actually do. As said before much of it is psychological, you put it in your tank and you pay closer attention to your driving/mileage expecting to see a difference and that alters the way you would usually drive.

The bottom line is if the additives really worked then the fuel stations would be using it in their own fuel to have an edge over the competition, the way Shell claims to with their fuels. Stations already add their own package of additives to the fuel when it is picked up at the refinery, you never get straight Diesel from the pump.

With the profits they are making right now, they would be foolish to put any additives in their fuels. I am surprised they don't put pure diesel in a 16 ounce bottle and sell it as an additive. Some schmuck will buy it and claim it works wonders.

I agree with B100 as the best all around cleaner, but I have had good results using Diesel Purge. I would run it from a glass jar and boy would it turn black by the end of the treatment! At $7 a can using two cans every six months I paid a whopping $28 a year on it.

Of course now that I run almost exclusively on B100 I don't bother with DP any longer. I have also stopped using Lucas or Diesel Kleen and the OM603 is running better than with D2 + additives
