That does make us feel better!

We are in dire need of the two top bolts: 70mm in length, 17mm head, smooth shaft with threaded ends....that secure the transmission to the engine. They were missing on our project car's setup....so we need them. We checked with the dealer and they said that none exist anymore to buy new. Anyone have a couple that they'd sell or know where we could find some??? This could hold up our whole project!

Well, I sourced a set of trans mounting bolts through a forum member here...this forum rocks!

Also, we got the trans back today, its all set to go! $285 for new seals, thats it!

While at the trans shop the invoice for someone with a 2002 GMC Envoy was on the counter....we had a peek.... $1900!!! Complaint: "Transmission fails to shift sometimes" Repair: Full rebuild 6 year old vehicle!

We gladly loaded up our excellent condition 313k on it trans and drove away.

Here we go, some pictures of what is presently being done....this was yesterday, my dad cleaned out the whole engine compartment nice and shiny. Today he did minor rust spot treatment and primer paint, later he will do blue paint and install the new motor mounts. The big day of re-install draws near! Many (better quality pics) will be taken during the process. I only took these quick with my phone.

Here they are:

Nicely resealed and cleaned up trans ready to go!

The diseased engine: (new one is under tarp on the trailer)

Must be nice having everything out, you can really do a good job cleaning!

Have you checked the new engine for leaks? Now is the time to deal with oil leaks...

Yes I have checked it for leaks, it seems to be essentially leak free....I am replacing the gasket between the block and the oil filter housing though just because its a good time to do so. It only has about 160k on it and ran excellent when pulled.

However, tomorrow we get back at it! We have all parts ready and just need to get to work. Hopefully it will be done by the end of the week!

Then we'll be swapping out the rear end on my dad's daily driver 300SD....with a 2.47 diff and new axles. Plus some new flex discs too.....

Its In!!

We worked all day today and the engine/trans are now installed!!!!!!! Yeah! Lots of work to do yet though, all hookups, new alternator is needed, driveshaft install, all fluids, radiator etc....we'll do a bunch of that tomorrow. We also have to order a few more things, so it should be ready to hit the road by early to mid next week! I'll post some pics later on, I'm writing this on the garage PC.

It lives!!!!!!!!!!!

She lives!!!!!!!! We finally started it today! All fluids are in, trans works, engine runs niiice. Right now we're running it to operating temp and doing a coolant flush/fill. Then it will essentially be all set!!!

The engine is a Mercedes Reman, appearantly the car with 160k it came from needed a new motor at some point. It runs like new! So the motor has less than 100k most likely.

The tach amp that I found in the junk yard (free) and had put on our project car let out the magic smoke when we powered up the car! It got hot and smoked. Yikes. I wonder if its wired wrong or if the amp is bad. So far as I know the tach amp wiring was untouched. But when we got the car the cap was on it but empty. Oh well, we can live without a tach.

A couple small fuel leaks on the injectors but I'll sort those out tomorrow. Aside from that it runs good, no other leaks, trans works. Engine has some power! We're pleased! It could be on the road by tomorrow afternoon if he can get it registered!

Good job! It feels good when after all that work, she fires up.

I've just started two projects; rebuilding an engine for a 240D and a complete restoration of a 30SDL.

Its good to see you are giving the car "a new life."

I just picked up a 240D for $400 a little over a week ago. It was not running, but after a new primer pump it is.

I am hoping my "project" doesn't get too expensive. So far, it drives ok, though I can tell it needs an air filter, oil change, alignment and tires to really hit the road seriously. I am afraid to know what else I will find out down the road, but well, I've owned a w123 and w126 before... I know how it can go.

For a reliable, enjoyable car, it will still probably land on the cheap side of things though.
