W201 Underbody Aerodynamics...

Anyone have hard and fast MPG numbers (for those who have 190D's) of cars with noise encapsulation plastic in place vs, those who have them removed? Any changes other than noise levels? My 87 190D 2.5 N/A has a tad bit less noise with all that in place but my odometer is broken and don't have a way to tell if its worth keeping for MPG reasons....Cooling problems? Disadvantages? Anyone? Anyone?

MB put them there for a reason.

MB sold the 3.5 liter Diesel hopefully for different reasons

Mine fell off on the highway a few months ago. I'm having egr problems that may be affecting fuel economy. Once I fix that I'm buying a new anti-noise capsue. I'll be sure to post the before/after mpg.

Let's just say I have no intention of removing mine to see if I can make the mileage worse.

Help me out here.

I'm a multiple W201 owner. I am ignorant of some of the terminology. Which parts are included in the "noise encapsulation capsule"? Are these the plastic inner fender liners, or the plastic ventilated "boxes" which are around the horn area on the passenger's side and the oil cooler (87 2.5 TD) on the driver's side?

They are the insulated panels that go underneath the car. They cover the engine (front panel) and the transmission (rear panel). At least that is what they do on the 124.

Same on 201. They also help to keep the engine clean, keep the diesel noise down, keep the engine airflow going through the radiator, good to have.

1 & 1/2 to be exact. The front pannel came off completely with the washers still attached to the car. The back one disconnected in the front, being eaten away at by the asphalt for 7 minutes of freeway driving. It's held up by nylon rope at the moment.
