Unhappy New to Me 190D - No fourth Gear

I bought this 190D a couple of days ago for $1400, not a bad deal I thought. The test drive with in the middle of Portland so I didn't break 35mph and thus I didn't get any further than 3rd gear (an act of stupidity I know). So on the drive home I get on the freeway and notice that if I go to 65mph I am headed for a bit under 4k rpms, oops.

So things I have tried:

• Adjusting the bowden cable and even disconnecting it. No dice, shifts 1-2-3 really fast but still no fourth

• Disconnected tranny Vac lines. Nope, just shifts really hard not suprisingly

• Checked kickdown solenoid and ensured it wasn't stuck on (it wasn't)

• Pulled the pan and replaced fluid and filter. No change

When I pulled the pan I strained the fluid through a coffee filter and there was NOTHING in it. No fibers, metal, nada. The fluid itself didn't look to bad either but definitely had not been changed recently. The transmission shifts great in the first 3 gears and reverse, just no fourth :-(

As for the car itself, it wasn't too bad a deal for $1400. Great interior, working AC, working Antenna, doorlocks, windows, sunroof. Paint is in good condition for silver with a bit of bubbled clearcoat on the sunroof. It had all of its receipts and records and the engine was replaced about 10k ago (it has 201k on the body).

So any ideas on other things I can try for the transmission?

Are you sure that you're starting in first gear? Many of the older cars don't unless you take off very quickly.

I don't know what your RPM should be at 65. That does sound high, but I have no idea what's in your car. I don't know much about the 190D, but someone else might if you list the year and engine.

Actualy all 1980's mercedes starts in 2nd gear if you mesh the pedal it should drop into 1st gear or low gear if not then there is some problems with the trans pistons idk which ones, do u have a 2.2 4 cylinder if so then its normal for it to be near 4k because there where is the peak horsepower and its needed in the highway...

can you downshift or upshift?

IF you cant do either or just one of them then you have a bad governor or hydraulic problems with the transmission which include stuck valves in the valve body, bad/worn out seals within the tranny.

My '87 190D 2.5T and my '87 300D Turbos all start in 1st gear. They "stand" in 2nd, as soon as you begin to move the start in 1st regardless of how gentle you are with the pedal. The gassers I believe started in 2nd unless you mashed the pedal or shifted down to the 2 position before starting. I can't comment on the 123s and before, nor the 126s, but I'm guessing that if your 190D is a 2.5 it is supposed to start in 1st like the 2.5Turbo.

I feel like a total prat, Matt L was right, it's starting 2nd.

But wow, it seems to rev higher than my old w115! Methinks I need to order a hood pad so the sound is not quite so live

Now that that is settled and I feel the fool, I figure I'll highjack the thread: The other thing I noticed when out driving about today is that the temp gauge bounces up and down all the time randomly. Would this be the sensor or the gauge?

A bouncing temperature gauge is probably a faulty ground, either at the instrument panel or between the engine and body.

The 1985 300D Turbo (W123, OM617) has a 722.4 transmission and always starts in 1st gear. This is not just my experience, it is what the factory manual ("Introduction into service") says for the 1985 model year.

Exclamation

4,000 RPMs at 65MPH isn't right for any vehicle with an Overdrive transmission.

Something is keeping your transmission from getting in to Overdrive (4th Gear).

BTW, what are the rear end ratios on 190D Series ?

Given 4000 rpm and 175/70-14 tires (per tirerack.com) = 853 revs per mile (per miata.net), an 84 190D AT should be going over 80 mph in fourth gear. It should be turning closer to 3200 rpm at 65 mph.

Given a third gear ratio of 1.49 (per Nitske), 4000 rpm would be something like 55 mph.

Check the speedo part number or max speed vs a known good 190D. Maybe the speedo or odometer failed in the past and someone replaced it with a 190E unit.

Mine starts in 1st gear everytime, despite all the notes in forums that say that the 190s start in 2nd. 63 mph = 100 kph, and my engine is at about 2500rpm at that speed. Something just doesn't make sense with your setup. Mine is a 190D 2.5 turbo/auto.

I'm going out on a limb but 4th gear is 1:1 on all MB 4-speeds since the 70s, AT and MT.
