I've brought my SDL down a few dirt roads...and I cringe every time at the thought to throwing dust/mud all over (Those who saw me at the meet on June 14th know why...) I find that the ground clearance is actually somewhat respectable if you compare it to say an Accord or even a w210 E-calass

That being said, there are other Mercedes to be used for proper off-roading...

My 240D sees a decent amount of time off road. Never had a problem. I love this car

The W126 has a heavy duty suspension so you can even carry some of the back country women too.

For me, running the big excavators is my favorite part of construction. The one in my pic is a Hitachi 350. It was pretty bare bones, however the CATs and John Deers are like the Cadillacs of excavators. Adjustable seats, radio, ac/heater, computer screen gauges, its almost like sitting in an office.

The Volvo's and this Kamatsu are pretty nice. They have AC/heat, radio, and computer layouts for whatever you want to know. The seats freaken rule since they are designed to sit in all day. His Volvo 160 is built very well, they used silicone houses for the coolant! I was looking at it, reminds me of a MB they seem to use similer suppliers for the wires and such.

My favorite part is getting the check after the project sells, and chasing down the deals. Although the equipment is fun.

The John Deer's are nice though, my uncle also has a 310 and 410 backhoe's which are pretty nice.

If I was buying them I would get CAT or JD just because they are American.

More like 200ish at most.

?? A 380SE with an open diff would not be so good in the snow....unless you had chains or super studded tires on it or something.

Then again I suppose you could just floor it and shred through the snow to pavement, that works too! (and I've done it many times )

I did get stuck in our driveway this past winter and used our 300D to drag it out...worked pretty good.

Oh I don't drive these cars in the snow. Tried that for two winters, they suck at that.

The oldest MB I have found to be decent in the snow is the 210 or 140. You need a locking rear, and some traction aids to party when its white out. 4maitc certianly helps. An S430 4Matic is like a Humvee compared to my car.

If you lay the passenger seat down and back you can fit 8 foot lumber in the cabin without tearing anything up?
Have to go grab some gutter to repair some tree damage. Never even thought of using the W126. Gonna grab a few blankets to protect the leather and make the attempt.

Thats one of the reasons I'd like to upgrade to a W140 someday... It'd be nice to have reliable traction in the bad times of winter....

Then again I could just fork out the $$ and add a limited slip to my W126....

When I started building my house I had to make a decision, buy a truck or use my 240D with a trailer to haul lumber, sheetrock etc.
I went with the 240D+flatbed trailer as it was more practical particularly for hauling long lumber up to 18’ long, the combination has turned out to be just ideal and no problems.
