Cool thanks! Did you say it's not that hard to replace? I'm assuming the IP comes all the way out. Seems like a good day or two tough job with the engine in the bay. Am I right on that?

In the mean time if I remove the IP, I think I see a diesel leak on the side and/or bottom plate of the Injection Pump. Are gaskets for these available? If so, is it something a normal guy (non IP specialist) can do?

Accept for the Fuel Supply pump all of the Diesel Fuel is in the upper 1/2 of the IP. No diesel fuel should be leaking from the inside to the outside of the bottom plate (that seals the IP oil sump). At least not on the 2 vehicles you have made before 1989.

Well, time to pull the IP...

Man I was hoping it wouldn't come to this. Here are my options. Give me some opinions here:

A. Do it myself and it'll cost me just a good amount of time and $7 for an o-ring including shipping.

B. Tow it 70 miles to the nearest MB dealer. The tech there has done lots of diesel pump work and it'll cost me around $700-800 to have the o-ring replaced. He also recommended having the pump checked by a diesel shop while it's out.

Which is a better option? I'm guessing either way I'll want to replace/have replaced the Delivery Valve O-rings while it's out.

If I do it myself it's probably worth the $700 saved if I can do it in one day without any issues of messing up the timing etc. I've never changed a MB Injection Pump. I've done it to a Ford with a rotary Standyne pump and it was a piece of cake. But I have no idea what to expect with the MB. Is getting the old IP back in the same spot a nightmare?

Can I just mark the spot and put it back exactly where it was or is that wishful thinking?

... by the way, here's a pic of the mess! Yikes.
