96-97 = 606.912 NA, 134hp(?), 34ish mpg, safe, comfy, reliable.
98-99 = 606.962 turbo, 174hp, 30ish mpg, safe, comfy, reliable.

The NA ones had 134 HP? How much torque? My 603.970 is rated at 134...

The NA engines had 134 HP at 5000 RPM and 155 ft-lbs at 2600 RPM. With their double overhead cams, these engines really like to rev, like the Alfa Romeo I once owned. If you try to lug them, they feel more like an OM617 in a W123 car (a 1980s 300D, I mean). Let them spin up and they go quite nicely. The '98-'99 turbo models have a lot more power and cost a little more in the used market and are a little more complicated to work on. As Old Farts, the wife and I are happy with the 134 ponies in the NA engine although we both prefer the OM603 engine in the 1987 300D (W124).

Great cars, simple to fix, parts are cheap, fun to drive, good mileage, and decent power...for a diesel.

great to hear that, since our family dont trust mercedes quaility anymore, such a headache and frustration from broken benz, and so expensive, also some mechanics charge higher prices only because they see thats mercedes? have anybody experienced that?
