No need. The free market is working just fine. Notice the tanking sales of trucks and suv's.

It's pretty much common knowledge that driving slower gets you better fuel economy, and those who wish to are free to drive as slow as 40 or 45 in the slow lane. I don't see a need to mandate lower speeds. Some (most) of us wish to drive faster and pay the penalty in fuel.

aha!
it is true, that "most of us" will continue to drive fast. congress wants US to slow down and cut down on the amount of fuel WE import.
the fact is, dropping the 55mph limit is cutting down on speeding tickets. and cops want more income from speeders. or whoever gets the money from speeding tickets.
it's getting harder to add in tax to the fuel, so they need to get more money from somewhere... lower the speed limits, catch more speeders "breaking the law"

Agreed 100%

How about the gov't allow importing of the more fuel efficient cars that are regularly available in Europe. How about the gov't gives benefits to the big 3 for developing more efficient vehicles.

On another issue, I think such slow speeds on freeways, even in the right lane are dangerous. 50 mph would probably be a better minimum speed limit for ideal conditions, especially if the speed limit is 55 on a certain section. There's a small chance that everyone will be flowing at a safer rate with that minimum limit. But I think the most ridiculous speed limit I've ever seen on a freeway is 35 mph. It was on a section of I-385 that runs under the Capitol in D.C, and there was NO construction going on that that time.

I gotta agree with you there, but it sure does fit with the diesel forum...
every so often, a thread relating only in the most obscure way to diesel is needed...
heh, perhaps you should throw in a od thread on here every once in a while just to keep our blood boiling, or to get some of us crazy dieselheads over to the OD forum for a while...
thanks roy!@

I have indeed noticed a lot less pickups and SUV's on the road lately, its awesome! I hope their sales drop to 0. To top it off, the dying hummer brand just aired a new commercial that says the "H3 has a "lower annual fuel cost than many other SUV's" Wow...by what? 1-2mpg? The thing only gets like 13-14mpg! Not to mention its just a wimpy 4.3L V6....it can barely haul itself around let alone pull anything.....that commercial was just sad. I hope Hummers are discontinued....their sales have fallen massively.

A guy sold us a perfectly straight good running 79 F150 today, mainly because it has a 460 and he couldn't afford to keep fuel in it. I got the boss to make it a builder, since it was in such nice shape. Before fuel got stupid expensive, that would easily have been a 2 or 3 thousand dollar truck. We'll be lucky if we can get a grand for it now.

I don't share your apparent dislike of pickup trucks. I'm not a big fan of SUV's, even though I used to own one. I think they're great if you get one because you actually have to drive off pavement (I did), but just to drive on roads, I think they're stupid.

In my own case, I had a sedan that got 18 mpg (Lincoln Town Car) and an "evil, Earth-destroying SUV" that got 25 (Suzuki Samurai).

They want to lower the speed limit because a ticket for 80 in a 55 zone is much higher than one for a 80 in 60/65/70/75 zone.

EXACTLY! Let's get the the heart of the matter REVENUE!

Remember Virgina is the state of the $3550 speeding ticket!

Think of the $$ if you get caught doing an additional 20 mph over!

And to that I say BITE ME! Who the hell do you think YOU are?

I have a truck because I need to haul things. Some of us NEED to use trucks. I dont go gallivanting around in an SUV just for giggles. And besides why is it up to YOU or the government as to how I get around? Just to make some politician feel better?? I pay for it, therefore I should be able to do as I need to.

Besides, most of my cars are totally fossil free (ie fuel, oil, transmission, rear end, power steering). Can you say that???? If you cant then perhaps we need to tax the heck out of YOU. As you are wasting more than I am. Perhaps you need to look in the mirror.

I think $4.50 a gallon gas should make most people think about speeding. I hope they don't revive the national speed limit again.
