American drivers aren't skilled enough to deal with people going 45 mph on instate highways. There would have to be a separate lane. I can just see the escalade in front of me trying to get around someone going 40 mph slower. I think the quote unquote free market will eventually resolve the issue, hell, car companies were making 40mpg cars in the 1970's. Its ridiculous that a Honda Fit only gets 34mpg with aluminum block and plastic body panels. If someone would market a car that got 80 mpg people would buy it, even once they realized it was as slow as a 240D.

Changing the speed limit is another all show and no go, knee jerk reaction by out of touch legislatures. I'm really tired of everyone telling me what is 'for my own good'.

Heck, that is why we're in the shape we're in now. Nobody is taking responsibility for their actions, and the government wants to be everybody's nanny.

Let the oil companies drill, collect the lease fees, and make the oil companies fully responsible for 'accidents'. As was said, let the free market dictate people's actions. All the US car manufacturers are finally responding to the diminishing sales of large vehicles, and this is not the result of government action, but rather, the consumer.

Lowering speed limits is only a way to 'enhance' revenue. We need to cut back on government spending, not fund more.

Welcome to America, where the gov't is here to protect you from yourself.

I drive as fast as conditions permit

I drive as fast as I see fit, no matter what the speed limit is. I've been driving since 1969 and have had only one ticket in 1982 for 35 in a 25. If you pay attention
to traffic, and have detectors, you don't usually get tickets. When I see fit I cruise at the speed that the vehicle feels the best at. My Jag feels
best at 89mph. my bike 78mph. my truck 55mph. the TD I have not had long enough to really find "the sweet spot" yet, but I suspect it is around
75mph. In town I go as fast as I feel safe to do so, almost always at least
10mph over. I have a perfect driving record. Just keep off the damn cell phone, watch traffic patterns, pick a "back door" and a "front door" car on the freeway and you can pretty much do as you see fit. Stay out of the fast lane unless you need to pass. My 2 cents. Perhaps I've just been lucky all these years.

the fact is, dropping the 55mph limit is cutting down on speeding tickets. and cops want more income from speeders. or whoever gets the money from speeding tickets.
it's getting harder to add in tax to the fuel, so they need to get more money from somewhere... lower the speed limits, catch more speeders "breaking the law"
It is called "Revenue Enhancement"....
There are still a fair number of high speed candidates ready for speeding tickets but I have to smile every time I see a Statey pointing his brand new Laser Speed Gun down the road and getting nothing since nearly every single car is within a few miles an hour of the speed limit...

Revenue Enhancement

Is not that what government is all about? Transferring power?
Look at the Autobahn. For many years no speed limit. Everyone
knew the rules. No more carnage than 'merican 55mph. If you know
a car might be coming at you 186mph, you stay the hell out of the left
lane unless you are carefully passing, knowing you could take a bullet.
Here in the US, road monitors are going the speed limit in the left lane.
They were likely hall monitors in the 3rd grade. Speed limits are not
about safety. They are there to give money to an institution that cannot
earn it. ALL sumptuary laws should be banned of course, but unless we have as strict a license requirement as the Germans, hell they didn't even
have cupholders for a long time, we cannot expect to have the road free
of cellphone using clueless folks that cannot stay away from the latte, and the cell phone long enough to drive.

Same here, and everyone runs 70-90.

Their Visa bills will slow them down, don't worry economics is a wonderfull thing!

I still see people blasting around in SUV's and $50k picups like gas is 50 cents a gallon. So either they make a ton of money, or its going to stop soon.
