My 79 300SD made a loud ticking sound. It turned out it was a cracked crank. I hope your luckier than I was.

My luck hasn't been that great so far. I've had to change the turbo, down pipe, and manifold gaskets since buying the car and I still can't drive it. I heard back from my friend who was testing my injectors. He said two were shot and the other three were not so great either. I have a donor engine that I'll be removing the injectors from this weekend. Wish me luck!

Not wishing to offend, but the 'light-bulb' shaped part of the Pre-Chamber is called the 'Hot-Spot'....
The glow-plug sits in there too, and can even be used as a 'light-source' in a dark W/S to examine the hot-spot and the upper half of the pre-chamber if the ign. is turned on with the injectors out...

A 'Pintle' is the needle part of the diesel-injector, the part that protrudes through the hole in the nozzle itself....

My old 300D used to make some 'odd' noises-- A regular nunk-nunk-nunk noise rather than a Knock or tick....It was just plain old fashoned piston-slap as the thing was just SO worn

Defo worth checking cam and pump timing while its still in pieces....

Good point, I stand corrected. I have never heard it called "hot spot". I have heard it called the atomizer.

Maybe its a 'European thing' like bonnet for hood and boot for trunk...
