If that car has been sitting for a number of years, you will probably have several problems.

Tires are not going to be in good shape.
Fuel might be bad, or have algae.
Check for nests, especially mice.
Battery
Spray contact cleaner on all electrical switches
spray rubber conditioner on all seals and bushings
flush brake fluid
change all filters and change oil

I would definitely trailer. Too many unforseen circumstances can happen.. But then again, they can always happen. Good luck with it!!

I'd plan on trailering it home, but for $500 you really can't go wrong unless it is a complete electrical, mechanical, and appearance basket case. From what you've been told that doesn't sound like the case at all.

Take look at it, take some pictures, and if you decide it isn't for you, you can always sell it. Someone on the board here will certainly buy it. Heck if it is in my neck of the woods with a body and interior in decent shape, and it has all of the drivetrain parts (just all of them there - regardless of their condition) I can pretty much guarantee you I'd give you twice what he's asking for it - without ever even seeing it.

Do not procastinate. These deals when they come along should be acted upon one way or another right away. Situations in a vendors life change. Even a relatives.
What if he spent 1/2 a day on it and got it appraised for example? A wait for awhile attitude might mean you lose the car at some point. Your 500.00 is completely safe in a mid eighties cd with low original miles.

Most the site members would take it hands down given the chance. Of course we will have a few members that believe nothing is more expensive than a cheap mercedes. As mentioned if you can get a pair of them in my opinion you basically cannot lose either.

I hope when you are fortunate enough to see a real bargain in your life that you can identify it as such quickly. The guy that identifies it the quickest usually lands up with it. You have to usually think and act fast when those situations occur..

I originally missed the post about the 300d. If you can get it for a comparable price, get them BOTH.

If you have to choose between the two it is a matter of preference, condition, and price.

Personally for a comparable amount of money if they're both in comparable condition the coupe wins hands down - unless you really NEED the 4 door (like if you have older kids). My coupe is my daily driver and my kids are 5 & 9 so having the 2 extra doors and the space that comes with them isn't a big issue for me. We have several other 4 door vehicles when that is what the situation demands. It would take a really nice sedan PLUS a chunk of change to get me to trade my coupe (which is in just a little better than average condition) for a 4 door - even though the 4 door is definitely the more practical.

I just like the looks and style of the coupe a lot more - and they are much less common. There were a total of 15,500 of the W123 coupes made (7500 N/A and 8000 turbos) compared to somewhere around 500,000 of the sedans. The sedan is a heck of a nice looking car - don't get me wrong - but they just don't have the panache' of the coupe. Not to mention that SOMEDAY, a coupe will definitely be worth a lot more than a comparable sedan. In fact it can (and has been) argued that in some areas they already are worth more than a sedan.

Anyways, my offer still stands. If its within a few hundred miles of Seattle and isn't a beater, and you don't like the coupe well enough to want to keep it for yourself, I'll give you twice what he's asking for it. Seriously.

But like Barry said, don't dawdle. Deals on these cars tend to go really fast and it would suck to miss out on a good one...

Got a phone number?

He's a farmer and has a huge collection of vintage autos so he knows a thing or to about cars and diesel engines. But there are a few issues I'm worried about. One, its has been stored in a barn (a barn that is used weekly) for over 10 to 15 years, but the car was a strong runner before parked. The barn is located in a dry state so rust and interior damage shouldn't be to big of an issue. Secondly, the car is located some 400 miles away from my house, and since I'm not going to pay to have it transported I'd have to drive it home. Laslty, I'd like your feedback in regards to what I'd have to replace or check before it'd be capable of a long journey. Obviously I'd have to drain and refill all of the fluids and probably replace the tires, but what esle. Would I have to repack the bearings? Is that possible? Would I have to adjust the valve? Replace the fuel filter? How much damage would the diesel have done to the injectors over a long period of time? I've always wanted a Mercedes diesel and this looks like a great chance to get one that is mint for almost nothing, and I'd like your opinion as to what I should do. Anyones help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Best way to resolve what to do is post the telephone number for the seller on this forum. By tomorrow you will not need to make any decisions.

at least post your location in your user CP settings. it's nice to know, makes it easier for us to field questions, and it eliminates (or entices) the vultures looking to take what you pass on...

Since you are getting the car/s so cheap I would trailer them home. Breaking down 250 miles from home sucks and is expensive.

If you insist on driving them keep it slow, no telling what works and what doesn't. I wouldn't trust the tires much. Also up your AAA membership to super premium so a 250 tow won't be crazy expensive.

I don't think algae can live without sunlight. Can it?

I've always understood it to be a strain of algae - like pond scum.
