617 Block Drain Plug

My first post! I've been reading this forum for 2 years and bought a 1982 300D T in January this year. It's been my daily driver until recently. Thanks for all the help out there. I knew a lot about the car before I ever bought one.

About 3 weeks ago my temp gauge stop leveling off at 79-80 as it usually does. I couldn't get it to go to 80 unless I idled for an hour with the AC on. It would get to what I guess is about 60-65 degrees. I figured my thermostat had failed open so I decided to give the cooling system a thorough once over. New thermostat, hoses, flush and fluid change.

I drained the fluid from the radiator (green!) and filled and flushed with water several times. Each time I attempted to also remove the block drain but failed due to its difficult location. I finally got the right combination of tools and work angle to get it out last night. I went through a third of a tub of GoJo in the past week because of that plug.

Question: The plug is quite short with about 5 full rounds of thread and no washer. The lack of a washer alarmed me and the length of the plug seemed awfully short. Does anyone have a pictiure of this plug and a part number for the plug and washer. I can't find either on this or other forums. Since the plug was a bit corroded on the end and misssing the washer, I'd rather replace both with new but I don't know the part numbers to order.

Any help would be appreciated.

As the old saying goes- Length does not matter, its how you use it. 5 threads is all it needs to keep the plug in place. Its not holding anything but itself in there.

Look closely at the plug and I bet you will find a crush washer blending in with the head.

on one of my cars the washer was there, on the other it was absent. no problem with leaks on either one.

Thanks!

I did look closer and there is a washer on the plug. I have no worries now.

I am a firm believer in Loctite where appropriate and anti-sieze where appropriate. I've owned and worked on a 1966 Triumph TR4a since 1977 and the use of these is a headache saver.

What is appropriate for the 617 block drain plug? I'm leaning towards blue Loctite for peace of mind (until I have to remove the plug again - it might make it more difficult).
