300TD throttle rod

I did my valves a couple days ago. I noticed the throttle rod had what looked like a groove in it past where it goes through the pivot bushing.
I thought it was odd that it looked like it should have an e-clip in the groove, but it was too far out on the shaft to do anything. The groove
is about an inch from th bushing. Then I saw a pic of a motor online and it
looked like a knob thing was on the end of that shaft. Should I have a knob of some sort there? I can't imagine what it would do but?

Where are you talking about?
I think you're describing where I drew the arrow in my pic:

If so, there is a cotter pin that holds the rod to the rubber piece.

no, it sounds more like the opposite end of that rod is what he is talking about. where it sticks out of the bracket.

I think you're right. I don't have anything on that end, but I can see how it looks like something could go there. IMO it would just be something to slow down its removal for the next valve adjustment.

Yep the stick out end

The end that sticks out, it has a groove, but nothing on it. That
is about as perplexing as that damn exhaust rubber thing someone
threw under the air cleaner just to piss me off more than the fact
that I screwed up the postiton of those damn rods at the front
of the valve cover after the valve adjust. Sheesh

all mine have a clip there looks like a chrome hair pin. I fail to see why it is needed though. there is NO way it will do anything other than keep your linkage in place in the event that every other part fell off...

It is needed, in case the throttle rod bushing degrades, gets pushed out of the firewall bushing and falls backwards into the space beside the oil filter, at the worst case scenarios. I've seen some cars that don't have them but mine came with a clip and I have no reason to doubt it's not original.

On your car ... I wouldn't doubt it either.
