617 engine tutorial

I'm working hard to get to know my car as well as possible. What would really help me out is a "101" course on my engine...for example, I have two slow, but steady, oil leaks underneath (to be truthful, the entire underside of the car is COATED in oil).

So, in order to track down the culprits, I need a little help understanding what I'm looking at. I've read a bunch of posts on here about leaks commonly coming from the crankcase seal - where is it, and what does it look like?

Also, I'm reading posts and watching YouTube videos on adjusting the "IP" and the ALDA - what are these things? My glowplug light just went out on the dash, so if I ever need to change the glowplugs, where are they and how do I get them out?

Basically, I'm fired up about knowing this car inside and out, but looking for a little guidance. Again, ignorance is not bliss, in this case. I checked the DIY articles, but still looking for more.

also, the search function is great here, the google entry is best. there is also a wiki for stuff not easily found, and of course, just ask away when you are stumped!

Buy a manual. The Haynes manuals are not universally loved but are commonly available. You can also get a CD-ROM copy of the factory manual from Mercedes at http://www.classictechlit.mbusa.com/MB/.

I have the original manual, and I found a Chilton's manual in the trunk after I brought it home. Both are helpful, but don't have nearly enough info that I'm looking for. Both are manuals used for my diesel, but also the gassers and multiple years of vehicle. I suspect they are all pretty similar (hence, the same manual), but I was hoping for a bit more.

The Chiltons is great - however, I don't understand what they're talking about some times!

Thanks for the link, too.

if you like the chiltons, wait until you get the haynes... both suck really, but the chiltons is especially poor.

Just think of things you want to know about on the car, then search for that here on the forum and read all the threads you can find about it....if you do that for some time on a bunch of stuff, you'll be very familiarized with the car.

And hello from Grand Rapids! Welcome fellow Michigan Dieseler!

Pay particular attention if the oil cooler hoses are leaking; if so replace them.
If you want to find where something is leaking you will need to clean everything that is covered with oil/grime before you even start to look. You will probably find that you have more than one area leaking.
I used foaming engine degreaser several times before I got enough off to see where the leaks were. Fixed what leaked the worst and was the easiest to fix and left the rest.
When things get to looking to be too wet down there I use a liquid degreaser in a spray bottle and clean it so as not to let the grime build up on it again.

Ahh the 617 motor...well, in terms of oil leaks...check the turbo drain grommet at the bottom of the turbo drain pipe (the oil pipe that drains out the middle of the turbo into the oil pan)...this seal sometimes dries out and leaks. You will have your seal leaks based on how old the engine is and how well it was maintained during its lifetime...such as the oil pan gasket seal or other various seals.

"IP" stands for INJECTOR PUMP. This is the device which pumps the diesel from the tank to the injectors.

ALDA is an acronym for which im not sure but its basically a glorified fuel regulator. Think of how a regulator on a nitrogen tank works...the more force applied on the regulator, the more fluid that flows. The ALDA on these cars flows fuel based on pressure from the engine.

I have a 603 diesel, so Im not sure if it applies to the 617, but the ALDA is not a necessary part of the IP on mine...just a device which efficiently controls the flow of fuel.

Any other questions, please dont be afraid to ask!

Diesel Giant.com is a GREAT source for info on your Diesel and also reading posts and checking the DIY section. The two Merc Diesel gurus on this site are Brian Carlton and Dave (gsxr)...they know everything there is to know about these cars...Hatterasguy is pretty keen as well!
