If just the bulbs for the gauges went out, your rheostat(dimmer) probably went bad.

You could try turning the knob back and forth about a hundred times to clean the contacts in it, otherwise you could remove the cluster and solder a jumper across the back of the rheostat which would give you 100% brightness all the time.

EDIT: You should take a screen snap of this page before you post again (123 post count )

I just went through that same problem.
checked fuses, looking a wire diagrams etc...
I changed the fuel/oil/temp gauge a few days ago because it was weeping oil, with a used one clean one out of a 79 240D. like it because it is not in metric, but good old American.

as far as the center cap being shinny, I popped it off and painted it black, so it all matches.

I pulled the inst. cluster out thinking I didn`t connect something, and some white powder fell out of the left side. (no that isn`t where I keep my stash)

I turned the rheostat (potentiometer) and it was all crusty inside with this white powder, probably from moisture? so replaced it off the old gauge and all fixed.

a new one is $93.00 from Fast Lane.

Using a jumper across the two pins, might be better to crimp two small barrell connectors to a short piece of wire and push on than solder a wire on. you might want to replace with a rheostat some day. PNP has a supply of these.

The W123 dash lights are none to bright turned up all the way (jumper), but I like em that way. I can think of better uses for $93

"Pacing nervously around the room. Thinking...... should I mention the search function? Pacing some more. More thinking....... Should I mention the rheostat which has been posted about numerous times? Should I mention that the answer with pics could have been found almost instantly. Pacing back and forth some more.
Nope. Don't say anything smart-alecky. Be nice for a change.
Hmmmm, baloney sandwich sounds good.
Walks off to make lunch....."

Jumper the rheostat!

How often does that happen in the same thread???

Does baloney still have the wrapper around the slice? The gap between my front teeth used to work good at cleaning those up.

I haven't seen baloney with the wrap still on the slice, but Liverwurst always comes that way. Mmmmm. I'll have to hit the deli counter soon.
