wood trim question

What's the scoop with this 4 switch wood trim ? The top one is from my 83 300D sedan (finish all flaked off) and has 2 clips as can be seen. The bottom one is from a 300D wagon (not sure year) and it does not have the clips? I thought they were suppose to be the same?

Did you remove the bottom one from the vehicle?
Looks like someone removed the wood layer and left the metal layer with clips behind.

I did remove it. How is the metal layer w clips attach to the wood? The back is smooth, with no holes or adhesives, showing no signs of anything was attached to it.

I've not seperated the wood from the metal. When I look at mine (I've removed the next one down that covers the CCU unit several times), I think the wood is glued to the metal. Go back to the bottom unit where you removed the wood and see if you can pop out the metal base that I think is still there.

If it was glued in place 20+ years ago, the glue could have failed and left the wood looking pretty clean.

Clean both surfaces with acetone and then, use clear silicon adhesive, apply a thin coat to both surfaces. Then let it tack, air dry, for about 15 minutes the clamp the two pieces together for around 18 hrs abd it will last another 20+ years.
