I decided to purchase the Dawes unit because it was a lot cheaper than the Joe P version. From what I've heard, the Joe P unit is a rip-off, and overpriced.

Where did you guys mount your boost gauge? I am interested in doing this to my 83 300D. Do you have any pics of your installation?

I used an Autometer boost gauge. The best place to mount it is where the ashtray is. Remove the wooden ashtray and you can stick it in that spot. Once you remove the underdash panel on the driver's side, you can thread the hose to the boost gauge through pretty easily. If you want the gauge to light up at night, splice some wire from the PRNDSL indicator bulb. Works great for me.

What do you use as a bezel to fill in the gap there, or you dont? what size is the gauge?

Also, what hose to you splice into to get boost pressure. I am kinda familiar with the hosing on my car.

Gauge is 2 5/8 inch. You'll have to get creative with the mount. I bent some metal brackets and clamped them to the gauge to hold it in place. I should also add that I bought an auxilary 12V outlet and stuck it next to the boost gauge. (Since I pulled out the entire ashtray assembly.)

You will splice into the pressure line that comes off the rear of the intake manifold.

I bought an immaculately kept 300D about a year ago and my only complaint is the take-off speed. Will this modification help?

Here's a few pics of my boost gauge and the area I mounted it. I posted these on a MB Diesel site that seems to have shut down.

More questions

How is the boost adjuster adjusted? Hopefully from inside the cabin?

Do you worry about the boost gauge and the boost adjuster getting soot in it and clogging like what happens to the banjo fitting on the back of the intake manifold and associated hose?

I doubt the boost controller is mounted or adjusted inside the cabin. I could be wrong. The line going to my gauge is still clean and clear after about 20,000 miles. Of course, my egr valve is on a permanent vacation so no soot should get into the intake or anything else downstream.

The boost controller is adjusted under the hood. You loosen a locknut on it and adjust it little by little until you get the desired boost level.

Electronic boost controllers can be adjusted from the cabin, but they are over $300 and do basically the same thing. Besides, once your boost is set, you'll end up leaving it that way. Future adjustments take only a minute.

It helps or not depending on the condition of your wastgate. The wastegate is a spring loaded valve. When the boost pressure reaches 0.7 to 0.9 bar, the valve opens and vents the pressure. Over time, the spring gets weak and the valve open early. You either adjust the spring to bring it back to spec or use the mod to get the right boost pressure. When you get the pressure to the upper spec limit (0.9 bar) and adjust the ALDA (doing so may damage the ALDA) to get a little more fuel, your car will reach its performance limit.

Speedy or anyone who has a boost controller, did you attach the controller to the fender well or where ? I assume it is best to use short hoses if you can. Hope to install mine this weekend.
