No ones sure. It seems to be different than Delvac 1 at this point though.

Very interesting. I use it exclusively in my 86 300sdl every 5000 miles. I use Mobil One synthetic 5W-30 in my daughter's Toyota Camry every 5000 miles. In my wife's Honda Odyssey I use Castrol regular Dino oil every 3750 miles.

I feel the Mobil One truck and turbo diesel oil has quieted down my lifters in my 86 300sdl. Previous owner had been using Rotella for the first 70,000 miles and I have been using the Mobil One for the past 40,000 miles. I have never performed an oil analysis at the 5000 mile mark, perhaps I will and see how the oil has held up. My EGR by the way has been bypassed with an errant BB in the vacuum hose.

Question Unless I'm missing something.....

Hattie,

Are you aware that there are 2 different Rotella's.....one dino, and one supposed to be "Full" synthetic......I'll have to read the label on one of my "blue" Rotella bottles......

SB

Just re-read the label....it only says "Synthetic" but nothing else on the label indicates a petroleum base.......

NOW....I wanna know, because I went to the "synthetic" stuff because I don't want to use any petroleum products that may contain Middle Eastern oil...

SB

it says "Full Synthetic" here --> http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=rotella-en&FC2=/rotella-en/html/iwgen/products/zzz_lhn.html&FC3=/rotella-en/html/iwgen/products/product_rotellasynthcj4.html

The rotella sheet says its based on free flowing synthetic base oils.....hmm....either way, the price is right and it works well in all our diesels....so thats what we'll use.

Just because it says synthetic on the bottle doesn't mean its got a synthetic base stock. If you search the archives we have gone over this in great detail, Dave, GSXR has done quite a bit of research.

Rotella 5w40 "synthetic" is what is called a cracked dino oil. IE it uses dino as a base stock with lots of additives to make it act like a synthetic. Its group 3 not a true group 4 synthetic. Its a good oil, either way I have used it.

Most Mobil 1 is also going to this cheaper base stock. AFAIK the only true synthetics Mobil sells are the 0w40, 5w40 ESP, maybe the 5w40 Delvac 1, and I *think* the 15w50. The 5 and 10 30's are not a real synthetic anymore. They are screwing with Truck & SUV oil as well, if I remember correctly Dave called them and they said in a round about way that its not the same as Delvac 1 anymore.

Just because you pay the synthetic price and they claim synthetic, doesn't make it so. Thats what ticks me off.

WoW!!!!!!
I am going to do some research myself, I have a neighbor who is a Mobil Oil petroleum engineer. I really thought that if it says fully synthetic on the bottle, it really is fully synthetic. Why pay synthetic price if it is not a true synthetic oil.
Many thanks for opening my eyes, and I will post after I speak to my neighbor.

I'd love to hear what he has to say.

Do some searching in the archives, its all their.

Like I said above, if I'm getting a good product I'll pay. At least Rotella charges you accordingly. They use a cheaper base stock as opposed to say Redline, but its damn good were probably splitting hairs, and its much cheaper.

Thats why a gallon of Redline diesel oil is $35, and a gallon of Rotella is what $18?

You can get a gallon of the Rotella at Walmart currently for about $16.84 around here....

In my case what I save on the oil I spend on getting a nicer filter.

I will talk to him later tonight.
In the meantime, I went to the Mobil One website and they do say that the Mobil One 0W-40 uses special synthetic basestocks, which means it is not fully synthetic. BUT it does say that their Mobil One 5W-40 Truck and Turbo Diesel is Fully Synthetic.

The Mobil website says to use Mobil One 0W-40 in my 86 300sdl. I have never used that oil, I do use the 5W-40 Truck and Turbo diesel oil.

I hope that my neighbor can help us here with some inside information. His job is to service all of the paper mills in our area with Mobil products.

We ran my dad's 300SD on Mobil 1 0w40 for about a year...and it was louder than it is running on the Rotella 5w40.....

0w40 is to thin for these old engines. 0 weight oils probably didn't exist when these motors were made.

Its a full, true synthetic. Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 is Mobil Delvac1 with a different bottle label.

Truck & SUV is no longer a Diesel oil, its basically the same as their regular Mobil1 g@sser oil.

Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 is what Truck & SUV used to be.

Talking Adding more fuel for disagreement.....

Hattie,

The other oil that most of you "boat" buys use id DELO 400

Here's what their website says.....

Chevron Delo 400 Synthetic Engine Oil

Chevron Delo 400 Synthetic heavy duty motor oil is recommended for use in turbocharged diesel and four-cycle gasoline engines, torque converters, gear cases and hydraulic systems operating in arctic-type climates and high temperature conditions. Using the latest synthetic oil technology, Chevron Delo 400 Synthetic provides excellent performance with either high- or low-sulfur diesel fuels and in extended service applications.

Features
• Easier cold-weather starting due to excellent low temperature pumping capability

• Excellent shear stability and are designed to not shear down to a lower viscosity grade in most applications

• Lower oil cost results from excellent deposit control that reduces oil consumption, and oxidation is minimized to help extend oil service life

• Reduced inventory costs are achieved because the wide operating temperature range allows Delo 400 Synthetic to be used in all seasons

• Longer engine life results from excellent soot dispersing and low temperature pumping, which reduces startup wear
• Available in SAE 0W-30 and 5W-40 grades

Applications
• Turbocharged diesel and four-stroke gasoline engines

• Torque converters, gear cases, hydraulic systems

Select Performance Specifications
• API CG-4, CF, CD (obsolete specification), SH, SJ

• Cummins CES 20076, 20071 (SAE 5W-40)

• Mack® EO-M Plus, EO-M (SAE 5W-40)

• General Motors GM 6094-M

Just adding fuel to the fire.....sir!!!!
