What filter goes in here?

1975 240D, I ordered the FSM yesterday, so I will eventually be able to figure it out for myself, but in the meantime..........
There is a cannister (it curently has no filter in it, and just looks like someplace to put a filter) a little further back than the fuel filter cannister, closer to the driver's side, has a butterfly nut on top, has at least one hose that goes to the steering box (?) and has what appears to be oil in it. I thought it was my oil filter, but from what I have read that is located under the car (gonna get ramps soon and change all that, I'm used to working on a Jeep, which provides it's own under-chassis-headroom without lifting equipment) and the oil filter I got from Phil sure won't fit in this cannister. So what goes in there? I know, I know, a pic would make it easier, but where's the fun in that? (besides, no camera available at this time). Thanks, Alex

I think that's the power steering reservoir. There may be a filter at the bottom of the cannister, I don't know your model very well.

yes, thats the power steering pump. It should be ALMOST over flowing with fluid, and it should have a small filter in the bottom of it.

I "think" your oil filter is inside a canister on the underside of your motor. it should be on the driver's side (left side...) I think yours has a center bolt that you pull out, and oil dumps all over you, then you pull the canister out and replace the filter!

On the '75 also check the oil level of the IP. IIRC, it DOES NOT get lube oil from the engine.
