Lead on a 380SL, would a 617 diesel fit?

It needs work but what doesn't! The owner overheated the aluminum engine and burned it up from what I was told, but it's a nice convertible and I would look good in it!

I would like to put a 617.95 Turbo Diesel in it. Has anyone done this and does it fit up to the automatic or should I just use my automatic matched to the diesel engine? I seem to recall someone here on this board doing this and mentioning something about modifying the frame and not needing a hood scoop!

Tranny does not interchange, bellhousing is different pattern.

I've been wondering about this as well, as I have an 85 380SL with a locked engine, and a wrecked 87 300D with an OM603..... Given the amount of free time I have lately, thinking about it is about as far as I will get.....

A scoop is needed to clear the hood.

If I had more resources available and a bigger shop to work in I'd be all over an SL conversion.

I sold a couple of 603 heads to a guy doing a 380SL conversion with a 603. He's using a 300E 5-speed and linkage.

Since I burn Biodiesel I'm not worried about the smell! My fuel smells good even though diets are a miserable failure when I get my WVO from my local doughnut shop! But I have always wanted one of these and this 1983 380SL with a good fiberglass and canvass top needs paint and TLC, but this could be a fun project.

Wasn't there a thread and pictures a few years ago about one of these conversions?

Well someone on this site is putting an M120 V12 into one, don't see why a diesel wouldn't fit.

A 606, with a 603 IP warmed up by Myna, a massive Holset turbo, and intercooler would be a good set up for a sporty car.

Yes! That's the car! I think a 617.95 Turbo diesel would make this little sportster scoot just fine. It also happens that I have a 617 Diesel engine from a totalled car along with the rest of the powertrain!

What other info are you looking for? It has been done, but it will take some custom work. Sounds like it will be a fun project.

Well I know I would have to add a hood scoop, but what about engine mounts, tranny mounts and driveshaft? I just wanted to find someone who has done it and get their take and maybe advise me of things I hadn't considered.

Those parts are likely going to have to be custom made, or modified stock parts. Check out Icefire's SLC conversion for some info, but keep in mind that he was able to use many off the shelf parts because the 617 was offered in the W126. I have seen pictures of a R107 with a 617, but I don't think I have seen anyone posting that they have done the swap since I have been here (3 years or so).

Here are some threads I recall that may help:
617 in a 380SL - laugh or cry
