Auxilary fan working? 1982 300D

Does the auxilary fan work only if the a/c is working, which I doesn't? I've never seen or heard the fan come on. Where can I find a wiring juntion to test it? The fuse is good!

I think it is controlled by a temp switch on the receiver. it COULD come on if your motor ever got very hot, but it's unlikely.

it should be near the oil cooler. follow the freon lines out of the condenser, one will go the the compressor, the other goes to the reciever, there will be two electrical connectors on top, one is the thermostat for the aux fan.

On the w123, the reciever/drier is behind the passenger side headlight assembly in the fender well, opposite side of the oil cooler. You get to it by removing air cleaner tube that runs from the front (above the rt side headlight to the air cleaner) You can test the fan by jumping the leads. IIRC the pressure switch has connection spades on it while the fan switch has wired pig tails.

Ok I found it. Jumped the leads. I'm not sure which one I was jumping. The pressure switch, or the themo for the aux fan. However, one, when jumped made the relay click on the opposite or (driver's side) fender well. The other when jumped, did nothing. Nevertheless, the fan didn't turn in either case. What next?

I had fan trouble a few weeks ago. Fuse looked good, but fan didn't work.
Changed fuse, and it worked. You can follow the lead wires from the fan, runs aside of radiator, to the connector. Run wires from battery, see if fan works.

Good move

Good advice I did find the connector. It was hidden up near the radiator and secured to the body. I knew there must be one closby the fan. I couldn't see well laying on my back on the ground. I disconnected and ran wire from battery heard a click once then nothing. Need to take out fan now to look into it further.
Thanks

What you probably want to do is test just the fan. I have dismantled many to check the brushes. That way when I sell them I can tell the new owner about how much life is left on the fan motor.

Facing the car, hood up, follow the fan motor electrical cable down under the driver side headlight. The connection is clipped to the lower radiator support area. Just unclip the connection and pull the two cables apart.

Take a battery charger if you have one and clip the charger cables to the two male prongs of the fan motor cable. Doesn't matter which way. Just make sure the charger cables do not touch each other.

Before you connect power, make sure the fan blades spin freely first.
If so, then the fan should come to life the moment you connect both leads of the charger to the male prongs of the fan cable.

If the fan does not work, then the brushes are fried. Most times, the casing that cradles the one or both brushes cracks allowing the brush to melt away.

If you need help with this repair, I can step you through the process which involves replacing the rear magnate housing of the fan motor, or replacing the entire auxillary fan assembly. Which ever you prefer.

Hello,
I need help with the fan. How do I remaove the winding part in order to access the brushes? AND. Where can I get one magnet? I broke it while prying the lid of the fan apart.
Thank you
David
