Question Buying a 4 speed to go into a 240D

Hey everyone,

I am still looking at a $500 240D auto for the winter.

whats needed for a 4 speed swap into a 240D? i have a line on one in a junkyard near me that i think i could get cheap.

i wouldn't mind having a spare auto trans lying around for the 300D either.

thanks,
dd

The auto used in the 240D (722.1) is not the same as whats used in the 300D (722.3).

Transmission, driveshafts, clutch pedal assembly, shifter, shift rods, crossmember and flywheel are whats needed to get it working. If you want to keep cruise control you need the computer box, wiring harness and (if it uses the vacuum type) the actuator.

Best too have the whole "doner" car as theres lots of things to swap, shifter & rods, pedals, clutch and hydraulic parts, drive shaft. Not a hard job, if you have all the parts handy

Use the 240D auto cross member.

Why? The 4 spd uses the "two hole" cross member.

That has to be installed at an angle which changes the driveline alignment and can cause vibrations.

He's swapping a manual into a 240D, so the 240D manual (two hole) cross member will work fine.

ok, thanks for the replies. you'll have to excuse my ignorance when it comes to swapping in the manual. i thought maybe going into a 240D / 616 it would be easier and less work than into the 617. but it doesn't seem much different.

and since the transmission is different from my 300D, it doesn't seem worth it.

im going to look and evaluate the $500 240D auto friday as my winter car. it comes with 4 new snow tires, a new battery and will be inspected. it may be hard to pass up as a winter beater and back up car.

It is, you don't need to modify any parts such as the drive shaft and shift linkages.

Agree with BG Kast. This is really easy compared to a 300D manual swap. It will make a 240D that much more bulletproof.
