Now, back to work. As you can see in the following pics, I aligned the camshaft timing marks and got a 5° retard reading in the crank. AFAIK I should be getting somewhere around 3° retard with normal chain stretch, right? Is a woodruf key in order to correct this?

Considering I have my doubts about the condition of my timing chain I decided to leave the IP timing for later. I'l rather hear your opinions about this before proceding.

I'll open my old fuel filter tomorrow night to check for engine oil evidence, just to make sure the source of my white/blueish smoke is not oil passing through the lift pump...

BTW, if I need to replace my timing chain, do I have to replace the tensioner as well? What about the guide rails? I'm starting to get worried...

Use the 2mm lift method before you make any changes but I would say a key is in order.

Ok, I'll get a gauge from the tool store and try that next weekend.

BTW, any idea of what sort of tool I can use to remove the delivery valve pipe connection from my M pump in order to check IP timing through the low pressure overflow method? The service manual mentions a "notched tooth 17 x 20" socket, which I don't think is an over the counter tool...

well, that really sucks... any idea what tool I might use to remove the pipe connection?

I really don't feel like grabbing it with a set of pliers to remove it...

17mm wrench? You talking about the hardlines from the IP?

Nope, I'm talking about the pipe conection where the pipe attaches to in the IP. Its the thing that holds the delivery valve and spring in place. In the MW pumps those are hex, but in the M pump its a "bolt" with a lot of splines.

Its part 1 in the attachment

According to the service manual I need a special socket like the one attached below. Any idea of an alternate tool that will not damage the pipe connection.

Well, I'm in Costa Rica now, so rental is not an option. Shiping will be more expensive than buying the tool.

I found this place that sells mercedes special tools. They quoted the delivery valve holder socket for $ 55 plus shipping earlier today. However it will take about 14 days getting that thing down here.

In your opinion, which place is more likely to sell this, a bosch distributor or the mercedes dealer?

Any other thoughts regarding my timing chain stretch? I really don't know if a woodruff key will be in order or if I should get a new chain and replace it... I'm kind of lost here.

juan,

I don't know if the Euro IP is different, but I was able to remove my delivery valve (for IP timing check) using a metric deep well socket with no issues. I think it may have been 15mm but I cannot remember.

Very interesting thread and interested in the results...

It is different.

Honestly at this point you might want to try taking a bit of hose sliding it over the valve and then put a vise grip on it.

Use a dial gauge and the 2mm method before you condemn the chain.
