Question w201 speedometer problem?

I have a 1987 Mercedes 190D 2.5 and the speedomter and odometer don't work on it. I was just wondering what I should do or if I should just replace the whole instrument panel? has anyone had had this type of problem, and what's the easiest way to get this fixed? If anyone responds, I thank you ahead of time. I once had a problem like that on a w123 and had to replace the instrument cluster which did not help, so I replaced the speedo cable and now it works.

Find out what's broken.

You really need to find out what the root cause of the problem is. It could be a cable problem, it could be a drive gear problem, it could be a speedo/odo problem.

If it was mine, I would probably try to drive the car with the cable unhooked from the cluster, and see if the inner portion of the cable is turning. If it's not turning, then go to the transmission end and make sure the cable is installed properly.

Keep checking stuff until you find the root cause of the problem, then fix it.
