W123 Electric Aux. Fan Upgrade

I know some you has prob'ly did this modification already but I just wanted to show everybody what I did this morning....I'm just bored....

Well anyway, this larger diameter fan is out of an '87 E260, W124 that I found in the bone yard and installed it in my '85 300D, W123 to replace the smaller diameter aux. fan in front of the condenser.

With a little modification and bending on the driver side bracket, it will work but I have to grind a the grille a little bit so it won't rub and chaff on the fan blade hub when I shut the hood down.

For those of you who do not want to grind the grille, you can use a more expensive Bosch brand which is thinner and skinnier but the same diameter so grinding the grille is not necessary, but in my case, this is the cheaper ACM/Germany brand, which is thicker, so I have to grind the grille.

I bet its a drop in replacement on the W126, as the grille is a little bigger/deeper....so even a thicker fan would work. Bosch fan is better though.

You're right pawoSD! but only in the 2nd generation and later, post '85 W126's

edit:.....but if you can get an post '85 w126 bracket, should be drop-in and you don't have to bend the driver side bracket.

I'm considering something like this to help out the AC (several days over 100 recently in the DFW area). My question is: "How do you know it's better?"

Larger fan, more blades doesn't neccessarily mean it moves more air (that's the real criteria, right?) especially when we are dealing with used fans from the bone yard. Is there a good way to test the cfm on these fans?

I think mine may be going out. It made what sounded like a bad bearing noise a couple of weeks ago. But when I had the time to check it out, the noise was gone and its seemed to be working fine.

I saw a 1990 300SE W126 with double AC fans. first one I remember seeing at our local PNP, most have one large one.
I wonder if two small ones will move more air than one large one. don`t think it would fit the W123 though.

I really don't have any definite and solid proof that it perfoms better, but the reason I installed this larger diameter fan is that, the W123 stock/smaller diameter fan that I had is making noise considering that I already have more than 350K miles on the odometer, then I don't have enough funds to purchase a new one to replace the old one that I have. When I went to the salvage yard last weekend, this is the only MB fan that I can find and pull, out of the 1987 E300 with about 140+K miles on its odometer, so I did the math, it's 2 years younger than my car and almost just half the mileage, so it's 2X better than what I have. To be honest with you, no matter how bored I am, I'm not goin to do this modification if mine is not broke......"Don't fix it if it's not broke".....so, literally, this upgrade performs better than the old and noisy fan that I used to have. Since I bent the driver side bracket, on my next visit to the bone yard, I'm going to hunt for an un-bent bracket in case I need to go back to a smaller W123 stock diameter fan if I cannot find any larger diameter fan like the one I have right now.

Yea, I saw that kind of set-up too but on a W201 190E about a few months ago, but I am not impressed with it because, 2 fans means 2 motors and means more battery juice required....then if it breaks, 2 fans to replace.....
