'86 SDL no power

When I idle for a few minutes, I get power for about 1/4 mile, after that, total loss. Sometimes it dies, sometimes it goes down to a rough idle, then recovers.

I thought it was the fuel filter, so I changed it...no change. I am thinking now maybe an in-tank strainer is clogged. Any other ideas/thoughts?

This is something that may take a while to narrow down. Start with the fuel system like you suggested, tank strainer, blow out the lines, new filters, etc. and see what happens.

Connect a hose from your primary filter (the plastic one) to a container with clean diesel fuel large enough to drive a block or 2.
Drive the car and and see if the symptoms go away.
If the symptoms go away you may have a problem from where you disconnected back to the fuel tank (plugged tank strainer or tank vent).
If you still have the symptoms while drawing fuel from the container you may have a problem with a plugged filter or a problem with your fuel supply pump (one of the problems can be air sucking through the hand primer).

Good call Diesel911. I'll give that a try in the next few days.
